Working at the Commons Center is a more rewarding experience than one could imagine. It is not just an “information desk job,” but, rather, something greater. Student operations managers help facilitate the entire first-year Commons experience. With everything first-year students need in one location, we assist students with their transition to life at Vanderbilt.

The Commons Center is a place of community and collaboration for Vanderbilt faculty and students. For me, a job in Commons is a way to play a role in the improvement and continuation of these services for the Vanderbilt community. I am really looking forward to seeing and being a part of the changes that are coming to Commons in the future.

What really interested me in working in the SLC was the work hours. Classes, meetings, and labs pretty much take up all my time during the day so the night hours were perfect for my schedule. The shifts aren’t long and you can work as much or as little as you like. As a bonus, I’ve really enjoyed getting to know the small group of people that I work with and it’s definitely something different to do on campus to meet new people, have some fun, and get paid to do it. I’d highly recommend the SLC as a great place to work if you’re looking for a little extra cash in your pocket while you’re at school.

The Student Life Center is like my second home. I practically live here and like to think of it as my very own mansion. The people I work with are like my family and I feel like I’m being raised by them everyday that I work and learn something new from them.
The initial attraction was the location’s proximity to where I would be living my sophomore year (highland). Besides that, I had a friend who was graduating who worked the desk and recommended I take the opportunity of working his position as soon as he graduated. I applied and got the job. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made!
The best thing about working at the SLC is really who I work with and work for. My managers and co-workers are some of my closest friends and I really feel a part of a unit here. Since the SLC hosts most of the larger events on campus, the experience I gain from helping to set-up the events and keeping the client satisfied with how their event is going has been irreplaceable and applicable to my tasks involved as the producer of musical productions here at Vanderbilt.

Working here at Sarratt has been a great experience. I have had the opportunity to take on responsibilities that, here in the student center, I would never have imagined. However, what I like most is the friendly work environment. All the students and the staff work as a team to make the Sarratt Student Center flow smoothly. Although, we take our jobs very seriously we do have a lot of fun here. As students we interact with one another very well, have great personalities and are always willing to help each other out, if needed. The willingness to help one another made my transition into becoming an employee very exciting and less anxious. There were times that I was very nervous that I may forget to complete a task while at work, but we are always given helpful reminders. However, soon you will find that you have the hang of things. Here at Sarratt we welcome new people with open arms and you’ll feel it immediately. At the same time, with any job it comes with its ups and downs, like working weekend nights when you really want to be out with friends. However, the cool part is that we alternate weekends, which makes the good outweigh the bad. There is no other job on campus I would want! Here we can complete homework, when all tasks are completed, work in the center of campus, and sometimes get free food! So apply and you won’t regret it! Then you can work with awesome people like me

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working for the Event Staff at the Student Life Center. The work is very task-oriented, which keeps me busy and moving during the entire shift. We accomplish a lot during the few hours that we are working, and all of the time that I work is used productively. I am never bored. I really enjoy the people that I work with. Everyone is friendly and conversational but still focused on accurately completing our setups. Additionally, I am more aware of the programming activities that are going on in the SLC that I otherwise would not have been aware of. Working at the SLC I have learned what goes into event planning and setup, worked in teams to achieve a common goal, learned how to perform a process with maximum efficiency, and have become connected to a part of the Vanderbilt community.

I love working at Sarratt Student Center. I’m able to know not only what events are going on around campus, but also in the Nashville community. I am friends with my co-workers, people I would not have otherwise met. Building relationships with my co-workers and bosses, I’ve been able to network and extend my social circles, which have brought about job interviews and volunteer opportunities. Working at Sarratt makes Vanderbilt’s wide-range of activities come together, allowing the University to become a comfortable home away from home.

As a first-year student totally absorbed in the Commons Experience, I wanted to maintain an impact here, so I joined both the VUcept and Commons Center teams. Since then, I have had the ability to constantly interact with first-year students, friends, VUceptees, and strangers alike and make sure that they are properly integrated and acquainted with the Vanderbilt community. Through this position, I cultivated friendships with first-years and co-workers that I wouldn’t have otherwise gained.

I got an email towards the end of my first-year notifying me that the Student Centers were accepting applications for desk attendants. I’ve always held a job, so it just made sense to apply because I needed the money. I pay for all my tuition and expenses, so I was excited to have some help financially. But what I didn’t realize is that I’d get so much more out of working at Sarratt. I know it sounds cheesy, but as a senior I can say it has been one of my favorite parts of my Vanderbilt experience.
My job at Sarratt has significantly enhanced the time I’ve spent here. I’ve enjoyed learning more about Vanderbilt and Nashville than I could have ever wanted to know, in addition to knowing about all the events on campus and in the surrounding community. It’s really great to know what’s going on- it’s allowed me to go to events and concerts I would have not known about otherwise. In addition to having insight into “the know,” I’ve made some of my best friends here. It’s a great environment to work in, and both the student staff and professional staff will become your closest friends and mentors. I would be seriously lost without my bosses, to whom I refer as my “life coaches.” I’ve had the opportunity to become friends with people I probably would have never gotten the chance to meet without working here. My co-workers and I have developed friendships that now extend outside of the work setting, and it’s because of them that I actually look forward to coming to work. That, and I actually think working here is fun on its own.

I joined the Commons Center team in Fall 2009, the beginning of my sophomore year. As the first class to enter The Commons, I absolutely loved my experience as a first year, and the Commons Center definitely helped to foster an environment of learning, opportunity, and relaxation all at the same time. As an “upperclassman” I saw myself wanting to continue that tradition for prospective and current students, so working at the Commons Center was another way of giving back to the community that gave me so much. Working as a team member at the Commons Center, I have steadily grown in my customer service skills, event management knowledge, emergency preparedness, and “team player” attitude. As a current nursing student, I have to use all of these skills in order to communicate with my patients, stay confident under pressure, and learn to adapt to various personalities and cultures. I am honored to have had the opportunity to work not only with students, but in close proximity with incredibly knowledgeable and interesting faculty and staff. I learned so much professionally and personally, and I would not have wanted my experience any other way.

I was attracted particularly to the Student Life Center because, unlike the other student centers whose main interactions are with students, the SLC communicates with all members of the community. I wanted to work in a professional environment where I had a variety of client’s to work with and to be able to apply that skill in the future.

I was first attracted to working at Sarratt primarily because I needed a job. I liked the idea of working in a student center where there is always plenty of action and I ended up applying to Sarratt because of its centrality to campus life.
Working at Sarratt is a perfect combination of comfortable routine and unique variety. There are many aspects of the job that are constant day in and day out, but you never know when something unusual is happening in the building. You may come to work and find the building flooded, as several of our staff members did during the spring 2010 flood. Big on-sale days for popular events create lines around the block. Each day is a new challenge.
The biggest perk of working at Sarratt is being part of the Sarratt family. Everyone that works at the desk has his or her own talents and personality that he or she brings to the job, making work a fun place to be. We count on each other for help and support, share our frustrations and our triumphs, and generally have a good time. I would not have met nearly as many talented and caring people if I had not taken this job. If you are looking for a fun and interesting work environment at the center of all the action, Sarratt is the place for you.
