Student-Athletes of the Month

*The Student-Athletes of the Month are selected on the basis of the all-around student-athlete...effort and excellence in academics, leadership, integrity, dedication to team, campus involvement, community service, and the ability to serve as role models for current and future VU students and student-athletes.

Justin Green - Football

Sophomore, Major: Undeclared, Arts & Science

Why did you choose to attend Vanderbilt?
I chose to attend Vanderbilt because along with playing football in the SEC, I also could get a top-notch education.

What are your career goals?
I plan to be very successful in my career choice and have my own business or become the CEO of a business.

What does it take to be academically successful at Vanderbilt?
To be academically successful, it takes hard work in and out of the classroom. You have to be attentive in all your classes and do extra work if needed outside of the class.

How do you manage your demanding schedule?
I set up a schedule to keep me on top of all my tasks so I will not get behind on anything.

What is your ritual before taking a test?
I study for the test all week and then the day of the test, I look over the material right before I take the test.

What is your favorite quote?
“Some people find the light at the end of the tunnel, others get lost trying."

Why Justin is a Student-Athlete of the Month . . .
Justin Green has really worked hard to improve as a student. He has made significant strides in academic production from his freshman to sophomore years. He is much better at time management and seems to handle his classroom reponsibilites a lot better now. In football there is a saying that when the game slows down for you, then you have a good grasp on how to perform at your best. For Justin, the academic side of things has slowed down and he is handling school so much better. He is very deserving of this honor. --Max Martin

Liberty Sveke - Women's Tennis

Junior, Major: Public Policy Studies; Minors: Chinese, Managerial Studies: Corporate Strategy

Why did you choose to attend Vanderbilt?
I was trying to find a combination of great academics and athletics and there's no better place! The Hendrix Room didn't hurt either.

What are your career goals?
I'm learning Chinese and I want to be fluent and use it.  I'm not sure exactly what I want to do, but my hope is that it will be in the realm of international relations or international business.

What does it take to be academically successful at Vanderbilt?
Hard work, motivation, and great time management (especially as an athlete).

How do you manage your demanding schedule?
Practice, workouts, and classes are structured for me, so there is not much to manage in that regard - I just have to remember them (I live by my planner!) and show up!  Other than that, I have learned to use my free time well and avoid procrastination.

What is your ritual before taking a test?
I study (probably too much) until the minute that I leave to go to the test.  Once I get to the classroom, I try to stop thinking about studying and clear my head.

What is your favorite quote?
"The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." -Eleanor Roosevelt

Why Liberty is a Student-Athlete of the Month . . .
It has been an absolute pleasure to work with Liberty over the last year.  Her determination, vision and overall commitment to excellence are just a few reasons why I nominated her.  She is a model student-athlete and a great ambassador for Vanderbilt.  Since arriving on campus, Liberty has earned Dean’s List recognition, ITA All-Academic status and SEC Academic Honor Roll.  Most recently, she has been selected to live in the McTyiere International House, a residential program on-campus that promotes the use of foreign languages and the awareness of different cultures.  Liberty is an outstanding member of the Vanderbilt community, and I am confident she will continue to grow as a student and an athlete. --Shawn Fagan
