Pedro Alvarez - Baseball

Sophomore, Major: Economics

Photo of Pedro AlvarezWhy did you choose to attend Vanderbilt?

I chose to attend Vanderbilt because I wanted to be part of one of the best baseball programs in the country and at the same time get the best educations possible. I believe Vanderbilt has the best combination in providing a prestigious education and a premier baseball program.

What are your career goals?

One of my career goals in life is to take full advantage of the situation I am in. I want to graduate from Vanderbilt with a respectable degree and at the same time try to pursue my dream of playing baseball in the long run. However, first: things first, I would love to win a national title at Vanderbilt, the sooner the better.

How do you manage your demanding schedule?

Vanderbilt is a very challenging school. I had to learn how to manage my time and not be scared to ask for help. Vanderbilt and the athletic department provide you with all the help possible whether if it's with tutoring or even just talking over some classes with your advisor. But, I believe the most important thing is to know how to manage your time and be work efficient.

What is your ritual before taking a test?

Before taking a test, I always go over the material, sometimes more than once, then set up at least one review session with a tutor.

What is your favorite quote?

Achievement is not always success while reputed failure often is. It is honest endeavor, persistent effort to do the best possible under any and all circumstances.
-Orison Swett Marden

Why Pedro is a Student-Athlete of the Month . . .

Pedro Alvarez is the epitome of the word student-athlete.  He has quickly discovered what it takes to be highly successful in both his classes and baseball.  Academically, he is a hard working individual who is quietly conscientious about his school work.  Last year, he was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll for his dedication to academics.  Athletically, Pedro was unanimously named the 2006 National Baseball Freshman of the Year and earned his spot as a contributing member of the gold-medal-winning Team USA this past summer.  Pedro is a loyal, fun-loving, and polite individual who has strong values for life.  His perseverance and good nature will carry him far.  Pedro is a tremendous ambassador for Vanderbilt University and the Nashville community.  --Katie Feyes

Amani Floyd - Women's Track and Field

Junior, Major: Religious Studies

Photo of Amani FloydWhy did you choose to attend Vanderbilt?

I chose to come to Vanderbilt because it was the best academic and athletic situation that was offered to me out of high school. Athletics and academics have both always been very important to me. Vanderbilt incorporated the best of both worlds. I would be at an academically prestigious university and also compete in the best track and field conference in the world.

What are your career goals?

My goal is to become a law professor. I want to teach either International Law and/or Immigration Law. I would also like to open up a training facility for high school and college athletes.

What does it take to be academically successful at Vanderbilt?

It takes discipline. You have to have your priorities in order.

How do you manage your demanding schedule?

It's simple...I just do my work. I do work in between classes and after practice. I also do most of my work on the weekends, which gives me a little breathing room during the week.

What is your ritual before taking a test?

I drill myself. I'm great at memorizing material. I handwrite a study guide for myself and review until I know it like the back of my hand.

What is your favorite quote?

"God gave you the gift of 86,400 seconds today. Have you used one to say 'thank you'?"  -- William Arthur Ward

Why Amani is a Student-Athlete of the Month . . .

Amani Floyd is one of the best examples of what a student athlete should be. She is an excellent student and has always been proactive when it comes to her work in the classroom. She sets very high goals for herself and works extra hard to achieve them. She is a person of good character and an excellent leader on the track team. She has battled through some tough injuries in the past but has the potential to be an outstanding track athlete. She is also going into her second year serving as the academic captain for the women's track & field team. Amani is well deserving of this honor.  --Max Martin
