Student-Athletes of the Month*The Student-Athletes of the Month are selected on the basis of the all-around student-athlete...effort and excellence in academics, leadership, integrity, dedication to team, campus involvement, community service, and the ability to serve as a role model for current and future VU students and student-athletes. November 2006Julie Bartholomew - Women's GolfJunior, Major: Civil Engineering
I chose to attend Vanderbilt because of the unique combination of competing in the SEC and attending a top 20 academic school. Vanderbilt has a top engineering school, a great location, and an exceptional golf program. What are your career goals? I worked for a golf course construction company last summer and really enjoyed the combination of golf and engineering. I would ideally like to find a job in the engineering field that somehow encompasses golf, and ultimately would like to pursue an MBA. What does it take to be academically successful at Vanderbilt? You have to be committed to taking the time to stay on top of all of your classes and sacrificing some of your social time with friends. When I don't understand a certain subject I try to utilize professors, TA's, tutors, and classmates. How do you manage your demanding schedule? I will usually plan out my week and decide what I need to get accomplished each day to stay on top of my work. I always like to plan in some time to relax with my friends to keep myself motivated. What is your ritual before taking a test? I will usually attend a review session, and then will work through my homework, review problems, and practice tests. I always make sure to get a good night's sleep and wake up early enough to give myself time to review any equations or materials I will need on the exam. What is your favorite quote? " Imagination is more important than knowledge." -Albert Einstein
Why Julie is a Student-Athlete of the Month . . . Through her hard work and dedication, Julie Bartholomew has become an exceptionally successful student-athlete at Vanderbilt. She has been faced with much challenge, having to balance the demanding schedule of an Engineering Major while competing in a two-semester sport. On the golf course, she has made great contributions to the team competing in both the SEC championship and the NCAA East Regional last season. In the classroom, she has excelled in a difficult major, being named to the Dean’s List in three of her four semesters. She is also actively involved in community outreach, participating in Football Kids Zone and volunteering her time at the Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital. Julie takes great pride in all her endeavors and is a model of consistency for all student-athletes. --Shawn Fagan
John Ebert - Men's GolfJunior, Major: Economics
I knew Vanderbilt was a great school with an outstanding and developing golf program. I wanted to be a part of this environment, improving my golf game and getting a degree at a world-renowned school. What are your career goals? My goal is to lead a life doing the things I love and being around the people I care most about. I hope to find success in playing golf for a living at a professional level; if this doesn't work, I will get involved in business, but I still have no idea what path I would take. What does it take to be academically successful at Vanderbilt? It takes continuous hard work, always staying on top of the things that you know you must get done. There will always be time for fun and relaxation, but when you have to work, you can't blow it off. And even though you might not enjoy working, it will always pay off in the end. How do you manage your demanding schedule? I have the same schedule for golf nearly every day. I go to the course and practice until dark. Thereafter, I come and eat dinner, then take a shower, and go off to work. What is your ritual before taking a test? I always see how much material I have to study and then evenly divide the material among the time which I have ahead of me, making sure that I separate my time for studying from my time to practice golf or do any other school work. What is your favorite quote? " Everything always happens for a reason.” – Unknown author
Why John is a Student-Athlete of the Month . . . Also known as “Jeebs” or “Jeeburt” by his peers, John Ebert is an extremely pleasant and friendly individual. He has handled all his responsibilities as a Vanderbilt Student-Athlete with pride and dignity and is continuously striving to be the best he can both athletically and academically. He has been a solid contributor on the golf course. Academically, John is an outstanding student, being named to Dean’s List in three semesters, and to the SEC Academic Honor Roll. He is currently applying to the Owen Graduate School of Management's five-year MBA program. I am confident John will continue to set the bar high both academically and athletically throughout the remainder of his collegiate career. --Shawn Fagan
