David Price - Baseball

Sophomore, Major: Sociology

Photo of David PriceWhy did you choose to attend Vanderbilt?
I chose Vanderbilt because it was close to home and I wanted my family and friends to be able to watch me play baseball.

What are your career goals?
In addition to becoming a professional baseball player, I would like to open my own restaurant.

What does it take to be academically successful at Vanderbilt?
Everything you have....not kidding.

How do you manage your demanding schedule?
I do not really manage it....it kind of manages me. I just kind of do what I have to do when I have to do it.

What is your ritual before taking a test?
hahahaha good question.

What is your favorite quote?

James 4:10 "Humble yourself in the sight of the Lord and He will lift you up."

Why David is a Student-Athlete of the Month . . .
David Price is an outstanding and remarkable individual.  Not only is he a gifted and talented athlete, but he is a loyal, caring, and friendly person.  David is fully dedicated to everything he is involved in and settles for nothing but his best.  Academically, he is hard working and conscientious in all aspects of his work.  David is a wonderful teammate, determined student, and a well-rounded individual.  I can not say enough positive things about him. This will be only one of many recognitions David will receive throughout his life, but it is an atribute to his perseverant and hard working nature.  --Katie Feyes

Carla Thomas - Women's Basketball

Junior, Major: English

Photo of Carla ThomasWhy did you choose to attend Vanderbilt?

I chose to attend Vanderbilt because it is an incredible combination of world-class academics and very competitve division I basketball. I've also always wanted to travel when I went away to school. This was one of the schools that interested me because it is in a great city.

What are your career goals?

I'm not quite sure yet what I might want to do. As an English major, teaching is always an option, but I think that I want to become a lawyer like my father.

What does it take to be academically successful at Vanderbilt?

You have to be disciplined enough in your studies to know how to prioritize. Time management is also huge. You have to make sure that you get ahead on your assignments as quickly as possible. When your schedule gets hectic on the road, it becomes a lot easier, because your time is managed.

How do you manage your demanding schedule?

I try to read ahead as much as possible when and where I can. I also try to make the most of the hours that I do put into studying, just trying to decide beforehand exactly what I intend to work on for the evening. Procrastination always makes life more difficult in the end.

What is your ritual before taking a test?

Start studying at least five days in advance. Even if it's just looking over some of the homework or old quizzes. Look over old class notes, and skim the reading for highlighted quick information. Sleep well the night before and have a good breakfast.

What is your favorite quote?

"In God I place my trust. I will not be afraid."

Why Carla is a Student-Athlete of the Month . . .
In the short time I have known Carla, she has shown desire to improve as a student.  When she walks into my office to report a grade, she shows great pride in what she has accomplished in the classroom.  I am proud that she is starting to see her own potential to be a great student, and even more proud that she is working to become that great student.  Carla has made significant improvements in her academics and has worked hard to become a true Vanderbilt student.  This semester should prove to her that she is capable of achieving great things in the classroom, as well as on the basketball court.  Irving Berlin, a great American song-writer once said, "The toughest thing about success is that you've got to keep on being a success."  I expect great things out of Carla throughout the rest of her career.  --Christy Hogan
