I chose Vanderbilt for the rare combination of strong academics and strong athletics.
What are your career goals?
I want to be successful enough to live a comfortable life.
What does it take to be academically successful at Vanderbilt?
It takes long hours of studying and determination to succeed.

Over the past three years, I have learned great time management skills which are a necessity.
What is your ritual before taking a test?
Study hard, get a good night's sleep, get up early and get an omelet from Rand.
What is your favorite quote?
"Be the change you wish to see in the world." -Mahatma Gandhi
Why Russell is a Student-Athlete of the Month . . .
Russell has been an ideal student-athlete during his three years at Vanderbilt. He is a conscientious and bright student who has worked extremely hard to increase his gpa each semester. Russ has earned SEC Academic Honor Roll status the past two years. He is dedicated to his teammates and has emerged into a leader amongst his baseball peers. Because of his leadership abilities, Russ was appointed as a team representative to SAAC. As a pitcher, he serves an important relief/closing role on the team and has eagerly accepted this task. Personally, Russ is a terrific individual who is polite, confident, sincere, and loyal. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Russ over the past three years and am excited to see what great things life has in store for him. -Katie Feyes
Courtney Ulery - Women's Tennis
Senior, Major: Human and Organizational Development,
Minor: Managerial Studies-Coorporate Strategy
Why did you choose to attend Vanderbilt?
I know most people say this, but it honestly was the best combination of athletics, academics, and location. And the girls on the team were amazing.
What are your career goals?
My career is a little too uncertain to be making goals for. Right now I am looking into going to Law School, and studying for the LSAT is my main concern at the moment. My first order of business is to take that and apply to some different places - after that, just gonna take it one step at a time. As long as I enjoy what I am doing, everything will be okay.
What does it take to be academically successful at Vanderbilt?
The main key is having the desire to be successful. You can do fine just getting by, but if you want to leave having a successful record here, you have to want to do it. Without the desire, the hard work and discipline needed is not going to come.
How do you manage your demanding schedule?
Good time management. You have to weigh your priorities and understand that some things need to be finished first...that and having a positive attitude no matter how demanding things get.
What is your ritual before taking a test?
Coffee and cramming.
What is your favorite quote?
Oh goodness, I love quotes. One of my favorites is, "Let's bypass the nonsense and move on, because the minute hand moves faster than we think it does."
Why Courtney is a Student-Athlete of the Month . . .
Courtney is well deserving of this honor as she has had a phenomenal career at Vanderbilt. Moreover, she has become a model student-athlete embodying the unique characteristics entrenched in a Vanderbilt student combined with the requisite skills and talents of an SEC athlete. Courtney has been named to the Dean’s List on three occasions and has earned SEC Academic Honor Roll four times in her career. She has earned a number of athletic accolades including All-Conference and holds the school record for most consecutive singles wins in a season with 20. She has been an active participant in community outreach and is her team’s SAAC representative. Courtney is graduating this month and plans to continue her academic pursuit in Law School. I wish her the very best in all her endeavors and congratulate her on her outstanding achievements at Vanderbilt. -Shawn Fagan
