Carter Hawkins - BaseballSenior, Major: Human and Organizational Development Why did you choose to attend Vanderbilt?
What are your career goals? I would like to get a job within a Major League Baseball front office and eventually work my way up to becoming a general manager. What does it take to be academically successful at Vanderbilt? Time management, prioritizing, planning, and more time management. How do you manage your demanding schedule? Each week I make a list of things I need to do for that week, and every morning I look at that list and make a separate list for that particular day. I know that if I get everything on the list done, I will be in good shape. What is your ritual before taking a test? My only ritual is to prepare well. What is your favorite quote? "The harder you work, the luckier you get."
Why Carter is a Student-Athlete of the Month . . . Carter Hawkins has been a dedicated ambassador for Vanderbilt Student Athletics over the past four years. He is a caring, loyal, selfless, and enjoyable individual with great leadership skills. He is an excellent, disciplined student and is dedicated to absolute success and integrity. Because of his wonderful work ethic and sound upbringing, Carter will be very successful in life. Words cannot describe what a great person he is and how much he will be missed by the Vanderbilt Baseball program and by the Department of Student Athletics, upon his graduation this month. It has been a pleasure working with Carter. --Katie Feyes
Erika Schneble - Women's Cross CountryGraduate Student , Major: Medicine, Health, and Society Why did you choose to attend Vanderbilt?
What are your career goals? I will be attending Virginia Tech’s School of Medicine this fall. I will also be commissioned into the Air Force as a military physician. My goal is to work overseas on our injured men and women. I hope to have a second career after I retire from military service working in public health in hopes to achieve better health for all Americans. What does it take to be academically successful at Vanderbilt? Personally, I found athletic success to go hand-in-hand with academic success. Each helps me focus on the other. Athletics requires a strong work ethic and enthusiasm that transfers to academics. When one side falters, so does the other. I strongly believe that acting as a student-athlete is a lifestyle choice that one carries 24 hours a day where academics and athletics are related, essential components. How do you manage your demanding schedule? Managing a demanding schedule is much easier with passion and enthusiasm for what you are doing. I enjoyed both my sport and my areas of study at Vanderbilt. As long as I wanted to go to practice and class, these responsibilities managed to fit inside a tight schedule. What is your ritual before taking a test? Breathing and relaxing. My last years at Vanderbilt I realized that there are much bigger and important things than an exam. You prepare your mind, focus, and do your best. That is all you can do. What is your favorite quote? Arnold H. Glasgow, Goal Quotes: "Make your life a mission-not an intermission."
Why Erika is a Student-Athlete of the Month . . . Erika has been a model of consistency and excellence during her academic tenure at Vanderbilt. She has also been a decorated athlete over that span of time. Erika excelled in the classroom as an undergraduate and will be receiving her graduate degree in Medicine, Health, and Society after having completed her fifth year on the women’s cross country team. She is an outstanding role model and well deserving of this honor. --Max Martin
