Marina Alex - Women's Golf
Junior, Major: Interdisciplinary Studies (Managerial Communications)
Why did you choose to attend Vanderbilt?
I chose Vanderbilt because it has a great academic reputation as well as a highly competitive athletic program. Along with that, Nashville is great city to live and attend college. Overall, Vanderbilt is a special place.
What are your career goals?
After graduating school, I plan on playing professional golf. It has always been a dream and goal to be one of the top players on the LPGA tour. I have not done much planning for after that but I might want to go into broadcasting or return to graduate school.
What does it take to be academically successful at Vanderbilt?
Time management is the key to being academically successful at Vanderbilt. Doing homework every night helps to prevent having to cram before exams and papers. Not only that but taking small breaks during my studies helps increase efficiency. There is no exact way to do it, but this process helps me.
How do you manage your demanding schedule?
Having a routine is really important to managing life as a student athlete. Designating time for doing my homework, practicing, and rest is important. No one understands the importance of rest. I try to get 6 to 8 hours of sleep every night, regardless of tests or homework. This allows me to be energized and productive week in and week out.
What is your ritual before taking a test?
I do not have a specific ritual before a test. I study the best I can, make sure I get a good night's sleep, and eat well in the morning. I try not to study right before an exam because it does not help much.
What is your favorite quote?
Anything from Anchorman. Two of my favorites: "I don’t know how to put this but I am kind of a big deal. People know me" and "I am in a glass case of emotion!"
Why is Marina a Student-Athlete of the Month . . .
It’s only fitting that Marina’s 2009-2010 year ends with this award. She has had an unbelievable sophomore campaign! Athletically, Marina was named a First-Team All-American by the National Golf Coaches Association, making her one of only three All-Americans in Vanderbilt Women’s Golf history. She also was selected as SEC Women’s Golfer of the Year after winning the Women’s SEC Championships individual title. Marina set the Commodore record for best stroke average in a season with a 71.4 and placed in the Top 10 during 11 of the 12 tournaments this season. Despite the travel and competition rigors of the golf season, Marina made the Dean’s List during the Spring 2010 semester and is a two-time SEC Academic Honor Roll recipient. This award is extremely well-deserved. I’m excited to see Marina continue to raise the bar both on the course and in the classroom. --Nate Bell
