Amanda Fish - Women's TennisSenior, Major: Human and Organizational Development Why did you choose to attend Vanderbilt? What are your career goals? What does it take to be academically successful at Vanderbilt? How do you manage your demanding schedule? What is your ritual before taking a test? What is your favorite quote? "The real dream is being able to dream."
Why Amanda is a Student-Athlete of the Month . . . Amanda Fish, a recent graduate with a degree in Human and Organizational Development, epitomizes the ideal student-athlete, committed to excellence as a student, as an athlete, and as a human being. Amanda has worked extremely hard in the classroom throughout her career, having been named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll in three years. On the tennis court, she has earned All-American Honors in both singles and doubles; a feat achieved by only two other women in the history of Vanderbilt Women’s Tennis. She is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and has been actively involved with Vanderbilt’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee. Amanda has had a tremendous career at Vanderbilt and I wish her all the best in her future endeavors. --Shawn Fagan
Merideth Marsh - Women's BasketballFreshman, Major: Human and Organizational Development Why did you choose to attend Vanderbilt?
What are your career goals? I plan to one day coach, either at the division 1 college level or high school, and I am also thinking about getting a degree in education. What does it take to be academically successful at Vanderbilt? Dedication and self-discipline are two majors keys, I think, if you want to be successful at Vandy. You have to have the will power to work both hard in the classroom and on the firld/court. How do you manage your demanding schedule? My schedule is very hectic and sometimes very tiresome, but I try to to enjoy every moment and make the best out of every situation. Being a student-athlete is very time consuming and requires 110% of your effort at all times. You need to find a healthy balance between, school and sports, friends and social events, in order to get the most out of college. What is your ritual before taking a test? I normally don't study with other people for my test because I feel that I get side-tracked very easily in situations like that. It seems like I am always studying up to the very last minute for every test, fumbling into class with notes in hand and not a pen or pencil to write with. I like to use flashcards.
Why Merideth is a Student-Athlete of the Month . . . I nominated Merideth for student athlete of the month because of her significant improvement from the fall semester. For many freshman, the transition to college can be challenging. After some struggles the first semester, Merideth made a supreme effort to bounce back. She was the most improved student on the Women's Basketball team with her GPA jumping up tremendously. Merideth’s success is not by accident. It is a result of sincere effort, hard work and commitment to her academics. Not only is Merideth a hard worker, she has great faith and loyalty to both the Women’s Basketball team and Vanderbilt University. She is one that reaches for excellence on and off the court. I think we will hear a lot of great things about Merideth in the future! --Christy Hogan
