Student-Athletes of the Month

*The Student-Athletes of the Month are selected on the basis of the all-around student-athlete...effort and excellence in academics, leadership, integrity, dedication to team, campus involvement, community service, and the ability to serve as a role model for current and future VU students and student-athletes.

Why did you choose to attend Vanderbilt?

I came to Vandy because I thought it would help provide the most oppurtunities for me in the future.  When considering schools to go to as a senior, the combination of being a top 20 university, competing in SEC football and an excellent athletic and academic support staff is impossible to turn down.

What are your career goals?

My career goals are still the same as when I first set foot on campus.  My goals were to grow as an individual and as a student-athlete and to provide myself with the most opportunities for a happy and successful future.

What does it take to be academically successful at Vanderbilt?

To be academically successful it takes a lot of concentration and focus. Also, you cannot be afraid to speak up and ask for help from teachers, tutors and TA's, even when you think you don't need it.  One thing I learned was that studying smart is often more helpful than studying hard, and discussing topics with teachers and TA's is a large part of that.

How do you manage your demanding schedule?

It becomes routine after not too long.

What is your ritual before taking a test?

Relax and probably eat something.  It's hard to learn something new in the last few minutes before a test.

What is your favorite quote?

A quote I liked came from Olympic skier Bode Miller, in response to the Olympic hype. It's not especially deep or philosophical, but I thought it was pretty funny. He said: "This is going to be a tough thing for me to manage. My actions are not always consistent. I'm super-mellow and laid back, but I'm always thinking and running 100,000 scenarios through my head. Sometimes I'm disciplined, but I like to be a total slacker, too. I party hard, but I train hard. People are going to try and figure me out and figure out my motivations, and it's going to be a circus."

Why Jonathan is a Student-Athlete of the Month . . .

Jon Goff embodies the qualities of exemplary student-athletes.  A Co-Captain of the football team (so chosen by his peers), he is an excellent athlete who is likely to have a career in professional sports.  The work ethic, discipline and striving for excellence that we have seen from Jon on the football field are mirrored in his classroom efforts.  He has "tackled" the difficult curriculum of Mechanical Engineering, and has become an excellent Engineering student, achieving SEC Academic Honor Roll this year. Jon's leadership, courage, perseverance, and dedication to the goals that he sets for himself are inspirational to those around him.  I expect that his career path - whether in professional football or Mechanical Engineering, or both - will reflect his outstanding drive and character, and that his future endeavors in life will be rewarded with success.  --Elizabeth Wright

Why did you choose to attend Vanderbilt?

I chose to attend Vanderbilt because of its combination of top athletics and academics. When I came on my official visit, I could tell that the team had great chemistry, and I wanted to be a part of that. I prayed about it and felt like this is where God wanted me to be.

What are your career goals?

My career goals are definitely not set in stone, but at this point, I am planning on doing the nurse practitioner program. I am trusting God to make my future clear when He sees fit.

What does it take to be academically successful at Vanderbilt?

It's important to have good time management. Also, don't hesitate to ask for help when you need it. Using tutors, study groups, and office hours definitely go a long way towards becoming academically successful.

How do you manage your demanding schedule?

I try not to wait until the last minute to get things done. I also make sure that I find time to do things that I enjoy so that I don't get overly stressed out.

What is your ritual before taking a test?

I say a prayer and remind myself to just do my best. Also, I always make sure that I have a pen, pencil, and white-out because I can't stand crossing out mistakes. I don't really have test superstitions or anything like that, though.

What is your favorite quote?

"So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God." -1 Corinthians 10:31

Why Christina is a Student-Athlete of the Month . . .

We are pleased to nominate Tina Wirth as student-athlete of the month.  Tina is a hard worker and a very determined student-athlete.  She sets goals, and there is no doubt that she will reach well beyond what she sets out to accomplish.  She has steadily improved in the classroom each semester, which is an attribute to her dedication and work ethic. This past fall semester, Tina received her personal best GPA, while making the Dean's List.  We look forward to many more great semesters from Tina!  --Christy Hogan and Katie Berglund
