Tara Kane - Women's Bowling

Sophomore, Major: Sociology

Photo of Tara KaneWhy did you choose to attend Vanderbilt?

I did not have a univeristy selected when Coach Williamson contacted me about NCAA bowling at Vanderbilt. Immediately after my recruiting trip I committed to Vanderilt because of its unique park-like atmosphere amidst the city, high academic standards and credentials, and most importantly because Vanderbilt offered me a chance to continue pursuing the hobby that I most enjoy. Vanderbilt seemed the complete package!

What are your career goals?

I am considering a career in sports psychology, but I have not yet decided on a career path. Hopefully, I will discover a distinct career path through graduate school. All I know for sure is that I want to be independent and successful enough to fully experience life!

What does it take to be academically successful at Vanderbilt?

At Vanderbilt, academic success sometimes requires late nights and a latte, but most often I find that being able to maintain a balance between study time, me time, and sleep proves to be most beneficial. Even though academics are extremely important, setting time aside for yourself is also necessary.

How do you manage your demanding schedule?

Communication with your professors is essential to staying on top of a  demanding schedule. If you have a good relationship with your professor they will be more willing to work around and with your schedule during hard times.

What is your ritual before taking a test?

I am totally against cramming in the half hour before a test, so instead I watch tv, read, or exercise to alleviate my mind. Focusing on things I enjoy before taking a test helps me to relax.

Why Tara is a Student-Athlete of the Month . . .

Tara Kane is an Honorable Mention All-American Bowler from Greensburg, PA. She exemplifies what it takes to become a leader. Building on her accomplishments made during her freshmen year, she has improved both in the classroom and in her sport. For the fall 2006 semester, she had the highest GPA amongst those who made the traveling squad and has improved to the third highest GPA on the team. In competition so far this year, she has finished in the top 10 in three of the five tournaments played, and has been voted to the All-Tournament Team in two of the five that she has competed. Tara will be forever remembered in the Vanderbilt Bowling Records by becoming the program’s first tournament champion, winning the Arkansas State invitational during the 05-06 season.  --Neal Clark

Photo of Sean WalkerWhy did you choose to attend Vanderbilt?

I chose Vanderbilt because of its academic qualities. I knew that I would be really challenged by attending this prestigious university. Plus it was a chance to play football in the best conference at one of the best schools in the nation!

What are your career goals?

I aspire to because a successful teacher and become a positive role model for the student I teach.

What does it take to be academically successful at Vanderbilt?

It takes time management and a lot of dedication to the academic achievements and forming good study habits.

How do you manage your demanding schedule?

It takes a lot of dedication. I understand that I need to devote just as much time into my studying as I do to football. So anytime I have a chance, like between classes, I am studying the notes from the previous class. That helps out a lot and I don’t have to study as much at night. That way I can get an good night’s rest.

What is your ritual before taking a test?

Usually the night before the test I usually don’t study as much to make sure that my brain has a chance to rest from all my other studying. I also have a collection of favorite pencils that I use on test.

Why Sean is a Student-Athlete of the Month . . .

I have worked with Sean Walker for the past three years and I have seen a tremendous amount of growth in him. He has really turned himself into good student and that has come through hard work and sacrifice. He has really dedicated himself to be the best that he can be on and off the field and that is why it was my pleasure to nominate him for the Student-Athlete of the Month.  --Max Martin
