*The Student-Athletes of the Month are selected on the basis of the all-around student-athlete...effort and excellence in academics, leadership, integrity, dedication to team, campus involvement, community service, and the ability to serve as a role model for current and future VU students and student-athletes.

Junior, Major: Human and Organizational Development

Why did you choose to attend Vanderbilt?
It was close to home and offered a great education.

What are your career goals?
Eventually, I want to run my own business, but I would also like to go into healthcare administration.

What does it take to be academically successful at Vanderbilt?
Don't procrastinate.

How do you manage your demanding schedule?
I do things when I have time.

What is your favorite quote?
"If you don't grind, you don't shine."

Why Marcus is a Student-Athlete of the Month . . .
Marcus is both an excellent student and an excellent athlete.  He is self-motivated, disciplined, and conscientious.  He is always a pleasure to work with, as attested to by his professors and staff members who work with him.  Marcus recently achieved SEC Academic Honor Roll, and I expect to see him in graduate school a year and a half from now.  Marcus is an inspiration to those around him, and well-deserving of Student-Athlete of the Month recognition.  --Elizabeth Wright

Shan Foster - Men's Basketball

Sophomore, Major: Human and Organizational Development

Photo of Shan FosterWhy did you choose to attend Vanderbilt?

I chose to attend Vanderbilt because of the loving and caring environment which the Vanderbilt community works hard to exhibit. The fans are loyal and I felt the coaching staff really cared about my success off the court as well as on the court.

What are your career goals?

To make it to the NBA and/or become an accomplished social worker/musician.

What does it take to be academically successful at Vanderbilt?

It takes time management skills beyond compare. One must be able to get a lot of useful work done in a short amount of time. There must also be a balance between work and play.

How do you manage your demanding schedule?

I try to get most of my work done during study hall or shortly after, allowing me time to be social and hang out with teammates and friends. Mapping out my schedule daily proved to be of great assistance to me as well.

What is your ritual before taking a test?

Eat and say a prayer.

What is your favorite quote?

"If you're gonna pray, don't worry. If you're gonna worry, don't pray."

Why Shan is a Student-Athlete of the Month . . .
It is with great pleasure that I nominate Shan Foster as one of the February Student-Athletes of the Month. Shan, a sophomore from Kenner, LA, exemplifies a level of maturity that is needed to become a leader, not only on the basketball court, but in the classroom as well. Shan is leading the Commodores in scoring and is one of the top 5 scorers in the SEC. He has also made a tremendous impression on faculty and peers.  --Neal Clark
