Student-Athletes of the Month*The Student-Athletes of the Month are selected on the basis of the all-around student-athlete...effort and excellence in academics, leadership, integrity, dedication to team, campus involvement, community service, and the ability to serve as a role model for current and future VU students and student-athletes. December 2006George Drake - Men's BasketballSophomore, Major: Sociology
I chose to attend Vanderbilt simply because Vanderbilt provides me with opportunities that will be conducive to my athletic growth within a tough SEC conference as well as my academic enrichment while competing in a very challenging curriculum. What are your career goals? My career goals are to get a degree in Sociology (with an emphasis in Law) and hopefully pursue a career in basketball after college. What does it take to be academically successful at Vanderbilt? Do not procrastinate and go to class. How do you manage your demanding schedule? I prioritize. What is your ritual before taking a test? I study well ahead of time. What is your favorite quote? "Don't Procrastinate."
Why George is a Student-Athlete of the Month . . . George has a sincere commitment to experience academic success at Vanderbilt University. Since coming to campus, George has continuously exhibited the fortitude needed to be successful both in the classroom and on the basketball court. Each semester, he has excelled academically and his hard work ethic is now allowing him to experience success on the basketball court. Playing quality minutes, he is a major contributor to our basketball program for he brings much energy off the bench. It is a pleasure to see George become the type of student athlete we strive to have here at Vanderbilt. With his commitment and work ethic, I know that he will continue to experience academic and athletic success as he progresses towards graduation. --Neal Clark
Amanda Scott - Women's Cross CountrySophomore, Major: Chemical Engineering
Not only did Vanderbilt have the academic and athletic programs that interested me, but the key factor was Nashville's friendliness and charm. What are your career goals? I hope to work as a chemical engineer following graduate school. I would like to work for a company that does research with alternative fuels and energy sources. As the proud driver of a hybrid car, I am very interested in the environmental and political benefits of replacements to fossil fuels. I would like to contribute to the solution of the energy crisis.
Then, I might try and become a teacher at the high school or collegiate level. I am also considering coaching down the road. What does it take to be academically successful at Vanderbilt? It takes a lot, there is no question about that. There is always something that can be done or worked on. The important thing to me is to realize my strengths and weaknesses and determine how I can most effectively finish the tasks at hand. Whenever I can, I try and get ahead to anticipate the next day or week's new assignments. I do my best not to procrastinate with long term projects and papers, but start research and communication early if it is a group project. Also, you cannot be afraid to ask questions of your classmates or professors because this is a learning community and everyone is willing to help. How do you manage your demanding schedule? As the semester progresses, I develop a routine that stays the same week to week. There is time for practice, work, class, sleep, and some down time, but I try to keep it flexible and realize that it will all work out so stressing is not going to help. I do my best to use my free time wisely and efficiently and always make time to wind down and sleep. What is your ritual before taking a test? I strongly believe that cliche, "well-rested, well-tested." I also try my best to be prepared before the day of the test and stay relaxed going into the exam. It is important to me that I can concentrate on the test instead of worry about the outcome. Sometimes I even wear lucky underwear. What is your favorite quote? "Challenges come so we can grow and be prepared for things we are not equipped to handle now. When we face our challenges with faith, prepared to learn, willing to make changes, and if necessary, to let go, we are demanding our power be turned on." - Unknown "Therefore since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God." - Hebrews 12:1-2
Why Amanda is a Student-Athlete of the Month . . . It is my pleasure to nominate Amanda Scott for the “Student Athlete of the Month” for December. She has proven to be not only an exceptional student but also a good leader for the women’s cross country team. She currently serves as the Academic Captain for the team and is very well respected in that regard. Her hard work and dedication to her academics is second to none and she is well deserving of this honor. --Max Martin
