Why is Chris a Student-Athlete of the Month . . .
It is an honor to write on behalf of Chris Marve as Student-Athlete of the Month. In the classroom, Chris has worked with integrity and discipline to become a fine student. He has declared a triple major – in Secondary Education, HOD, and Sociology, becoming the first Vanderbilt student ever to have declared those three majors together. Additionally, he is on target to attain SEC Academic Honor Roll this year. His educational aspirations are to pursue further degrees, and to become a high school teacher and principal. Chris has also excelled on the football field, becoming one of Vanderbilt’s finest linebackers, receiving numerous awards and nominations for awards, and being elected one of this year’s team captains by his teammates. On campus, he is a member of a fraternity, and works as an Admissions Tour Guide as well. C Marve’s loyalty to his family, friends, teammates and school, his perseverance, self-discipline, and leadership by example, and his excellent character combine to make him one of the finest individuals I have had the pleasure of meeting. He well deserves Student-Athlete of the Month recognition, and I look forward to witnessing his bright future. --Elizabeth Wright
Rebecca Silinski - Women's Basketball
Senior, Majors: Political Science, Communication Studies
Why did you choose to attend Vanderbilt?
Vanderbilt offered the best of everything; one of the top schools in the country for academics and a basketball program that is in the top twenty as well. I love the university and the city of Nashville. It was overall just a great fit for me.
What are your career goals?
I plan on attending law school and then pursuing a law career that would lead into a political career. My ultimate goal is to become a US Senator.
What does it take to be academically successful at Vanderbilt?
Understanding that what you put into your academics is what you will get out. You have to manage your time and put forth the effort which includes developing a good rapport with the professor as well as investing time outside of class.
How do you manage your demanding schedule?
Time management is a vital part of being a student-athlete. It's all about using your time effectively...in between practicing and classes you have to use the time available to study. I think I do better during season when my time is limited rather than during the off-season when there is more free time.
What is your ritual before taking a test?
Make sure I've invested the time before the day of the test. Try to review for a little bit the day of and then go in and take it!
What is your favorite quote?
"I don't want to get to the end of my life and find that I lived just the length of it. I want to have lived the width of it as well."
Why Rebecca is a Student-Athlete of the Month . . .
I am so happy Rebecca has been selected as Student-Athlete of the Month. As she enters her senior year, not only has she grown into a leader on the women's basketball team, but with the whole student-athlete population, selected as the current SAAC president.
Rebecca has always been a solid student and dedicated teammate. There is no doubt that she will continue to excel in all that she does. --Christy Hogan
