Brittany Garcia - Bowling
Senior, Major: Medicine, Health, and Society
Why did you choose to attend Vanderbilt?
I chose Vanderbilt because it offers the best of both worlds. Here, I have had the opportunity to challenge myself physically on the lanes and mentally in the classroom with some of the greatest students and athletes in the country.
What are your career goals?
I will be attending chiropractic college in the fall at Palmer College of Chiropractic. The campus is located outside of Daytona Beach, Florida. As a doctor of chiropractic, I hope to disseminate the benefits of chiropractic medicine and philosophy to as many people as possible, with a special emphasis on athletes.
What does it take to be academically successful at Vanderbilt?
Two words: time management.
How do you manage your demanding schedule?
My daily planner is essential to my success here at Vanderbilt. First and foremost, I write down all my assignments at the beginning of the semester. Everything important gets written down too. From meetings with professors, to tutor sessions, to extracurricular activities, my whole life is plotted out in this small agenda (and it's color coded too). In this way, my daily planner allows me to stay on top of my demanding academic, personal, and athletic schedule.
What is your ritual before taking a test?
Before taking a test, I usually listen to music. I figure that in the final ten minutes before the exam, I have probably retained all that I am going to. So, while everyone else is cramming waiting for the professor to tell them to put their notes away, I am usually listening to some relaxing music to calm my mind and my nerves.
What is your favorite quote?
"Ability is what you are capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it." --Lou Holtz
Why Brittany is a Student-Athlete of the Month . . .
Brittany has been the model of academic excellence for the Women’s Bowling team for the past four years. I’m excited for her because this recognition is well-deserved. Brittany has been a constant on the SEC Academic Honor Roll and the Vanderbilt University Dean’s List. As she begins her pursuit toward becoming a Doctor of Chiropractic, I know that she will continue to touch lives in a positive way. On the lanes, Brittany has been an integral piece of Vanderbilt’s nationally ranked team, which has included many great individual performances and an All-Tournament team selection at the Holiday Classic this year. I am extremely happy for Brittany and wish her all the best in the future. --Nate Bell
