Student-Athletes of the Month*The Student-Athletes of the Month are selected on the basis of the all-around student-athlete...effort and excellence in academics, leadership, integrity, dedication to team, campus involvement, community service, and the ability to serve as a role model for current and future VU students and student-athletes. April 2006Kari Boersma - Women's SoccerSenior, Major: Economics and Mathematics
I chose to come to Vanderbilt because of its great reputation both academically and athletically. I also liked the idea of being in a fun city, yet still having the campus secluded enough to have the "college experience." Vanderbilt is the ideal mix of everything I was looking for. What are your career goals? My future plans are to complete the masters in finance program at Owen next year, and then continue pursuing a career in actuarial science. Hopefully I will enjoy my internship experience in the field this summer, but after graduating I plan on working at an insurance company while I pass the exams to become a full actuary as quickly as possible (5 years) and learn about the business. I would like to have an executive role in a company eventually. What does it take to be academically successful at Vanderbilt? One of the keys to academic success is to utilize the resources. Use professors, TAs, group studies, tutors, etc. The professors here are great; I haven’t had a bad one since I have been here. They are always very helpful, and they truly want students to learn the material. Take the time to get to know them and to enjoy their class and you will get a lot more out of the academic experience. How do you manage your demanding schedule? Good time management is the most important aspect to managing a demanding schedule. I make a lot of to-do lists and prioritize things to be done. What is your ritual before taking a test? Well I have a terrible memory, so I can not just quickly glance over my notes before taking tests. I am the type that studies all the way up to right before it. I take excessive notes in class (also because I can not remember what was said), and I do a lot of practice problems. I usually study best by myself, and I walk through everything we have covered piece by piece. It is pretty tedious, so I have to start way ahead of the test or I run out of time (which actually happens a lot)! What is your favorite quote? "Everything happens for a reason. When God closes a door, he opens a window." My dad always told me when I was younger, "A winner never quits, and a quitter never wins." He wrote that in a dictionary he gave me before I started high school.
Why Kari is a Student-Athlete of the Month . . . Kari is an outstanding student not only because of her impeccable academic record , but also the strong communication and leadership skills that she displays daily. Tyler Harlan - Men's Cross CountrySenior, Major: Anthropology and Chinese
I chose Vanderbilt because both academics and athletics are important to me, and Vanderbilt excels at both. I was given a great financial aid package, I like Nashville, and I've never regretted my choice. What are your career goals? I would like to work in international development somehow, likely in China, Southeast Asia, or Oceania (or all of them...who knows?). I'm planning on working towards a masters in International Development at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, then eventually applying to a PhD program in the states that emphasizes the anthropology of development. So for now, my career is more school. What does it take to be academically successful at Vanderbilt? Vanderbilt is a tough school, but anyone can be academically successful if they manage their time wisely, go to class, and do the work. Relaxing is pretty important too - I do alot of that. How do you manage your demanding schedule? My schedule is just like anyone else's here - I just set aside time to do work, to practice, and to relax. What is your ritual before taking a test? I sleep a good bit, study a good bit, listen to music, what have you. What is your favorite quote? "Mike Tyson, who has tattoos on his face." Why Tyler is a Student-Athlete of the Month . . . Tyler Harlan is the quintessential Vanderbilt student-athlete. He has availed himself of many personal and professional growth opportunities while at Vanderbilt. Last summer he studied in Beijing and Hangzhou, China and garnered the award of Most Outstanding Student from his peers and teachers. To give the award perspective, Tyler's peers included the granddaughter and future translator of one of China's most renowned novelists and future interns at competitive posts in the US Embassy in Shanghai and at Lehman Brothers in Hong Kong. Tyler maintained his 70 - 80 mile a week training while abroad. The thing I like best about Tyler is that one would never guess, upon first acquaintance, that he is so accomplished. He appears to be a regular student but those of us who know him know that he has an awesome inner drive. More of Tyler's honors include: 1. Leader of Mayfield Living/Learning Lodge in 2003-04. 2. Dean's List each semester at Vanderbilt. 3. Team Captain - Junior and Senior years. 4. Finalist for the NCAA Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship. 5. Best individual finish at the SEC Men's Cross Country Championships by a freshman in Vanderbilt history. 6. Male Student-Athlete of the Year in 2004-05. --Jamie Teasley
