VUSHC is staffed by physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, and a lab technician.
Our nurse practitioners are advanced-degree providers who have many years of experience meeting the health care needs of university students. Nurse practitioners are able to write prescriptions and provide care under physician supervision.
Our physicians are each board-certified in their specialty, are clinical faculty at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center and work closely with the nurse practitioners to provide care for our patients here at VUSHC.

Physicians
Louise Hanson, MD
Director, Student Health Center
Internal Medicine
Office Hours: M-Th, Fri AM
Dr. Hanson completed her undergraduate degree at Cornell University and then came to Vanderbilt University for medical school, residency and chief residency in Internal Medicine. After several years in private practice in Nashville, she then moved to the Student Health Center in 1998, and became the medical director in July 2007. As an internist, her main clinical interests include asthma and allergies, hypertension, and management of other chronic health conditions. Dr. Hanson is married with two young children. Outside of work she enjoys playing and watching sports.
Joan D. Gorden, MD
Internal Medicine
Office Hours: Tuesday 12:30-4:30 p.m. & all day Wednesday and Friday
Dr. Gorden received her undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Minnesota. She completed her residency in internal medicine at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, WA. She joined the Student Health Center in 2010.
Ursula Whalen, MD
Internal Medicine
Office Hours: Thursday and Friday
Dr. Whalen received her bachelor’s degree from Boston College and her medical degree from Wake Forest University. She completed her residency and chief residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She has worked at the SHC since 2010.
Jonna Whitman, MD
Family Practice, Chief of Clinical Services
Office Hours: Tuesday, Thursday and Friday
Dr. Whitman received her undergraduate degree from Williams College which included a junior year study abroad at Oxford University. She received her medical degree from University of Virginia School of Medicine. She was co-chief resident during her family medicine residency at the University of Michigan. She has worked at the SHC since 2005. She is married with two children.
Andrew Scharf, MD

Office Hours: Monday- Friday
Dr. Scharf completed his undergraduate degree at Hampden-Sydney College and his medical degree at Virginia Commonwealth University. He completed his internal medicine residency at Vanderbilt Medical Center. He has worked at the SHC since 2012.
Doug Connor, MD
Sports Medicine
Office Hours: Mon p.m., Thur. a.m.
Dr. Connor is a fellow in the Department of Sports Medicine. He has worked with the SHC since 2012.

Matt Bumbalough, APRN-BC
Manager of Patient Care Services
Mr. Bumbalough attended Lipscomb University and received his MSN from Vanderbilt University. He has worked at the SHC since 2011.
Kathy Jantz, APRN-BC

Ms. Jantz received her RN diploma from Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. She received her undergraduate degree from Villanova University and her MSN from Indiana University. She has worked at the SHC since 1991. She has a son and daughter.

Mrs. Coleman-Dockery received her undergraduate degree from Fisk University and her MSN from Vanderbilt. She has worked at the SHC since 2006. She is married and has two children.
Lilya Raymond, APRN-BC
Adult Nurse Practitioner
Office Hours : Tuesday and Friday
Mrs. Raymond attended American University for her bachelor’s degree. She then attended Johns Hopkins for her nursing and master’s of nursing degrees. She has been at the Student Health Center since 2009.
Alison DeHart, APRN-BC

Ms. DeHart received her BSN in nursing from Middle Tennessee State University. She received her MSN from Vanderbilt University. She has been with the Student Health Center since 2011.
Wendi Butler, APRN-BC

Mrs. Butler received her Bachelors of Science degree from Austin Peay State University and her MSN from Tennessee State University. She has worked at the SHC since 2011.

Jane Dale, LPN
Staff Nurse
Mrs. Dale is one of the nurses who checks in students before they see a provider. She is married and the mother and grandmother of two. She has worked at the SHC since 2002.
Vicki Golden, LPN
Staff Nurse
Ms. Golden is in charge of allergy shots given to the students. She has been an LPN since 1978 and has completed classes at MTSU with an emphasis in Health Education. Vicki has a daughter and a son and loves to spend time with her 3 grandchildren. She also attends church, loves to travel, and has interest in Art history and geneology. She has worked at the Student Health Center since 1997.
Tammy Mitchell, RN
Staff Nurse
Mrs. Mitchell graduated from Aquinas College. She has been at the Student Health Center since 2011.
Penny Meek, BA, LPN
Staff Nurse
Penny received her Bachelor’s from Trevecca Nazerene University in Nashville. She is in charge of immunizations and is the nurse for Drs. Hanson and Whitman. Penny enjoys gardening and does mission work near and far. She also loves children. She has a son. Penny has been at the SHC since 2000.

Dana graduated from Tennessee Technology Center in Livingston, TN. Dana has been at the SHC since 2012.

Kelsey graduated with her BSN from Missouri Western State University. She has worked at the SHC since 2012.
Scott Sinks, LPN
Staff Nurse
Scott graduated with a B.S. from Belmont University and completed his LPN training at Tennessee Technology Center. He has worked at the SHC since 2012.
Laura Wilson, MLT, ASCP
Laboratory Technician
Mrs. Wilson is in charge of the lab services performed at the SHC. She has also received her medical coding certificate. She is married and the mother of a son and daughter. She has worked at the SHC since 2002.

Ms. Dozier graduated from Tennessee Technology Center. She has been at the Student Health Center since 2011.

Janell Pendergrass, RD, LDN
Clinical Dietician
Office Hours: Wed 12:30 -4 p.m.
Janell is a clinical dietician in the Nutrition Services Department of the Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Her specialty is eating disorders. She works part-time with the SHC during the school year. She has worked with the SHC since 2000.

Ms. Bennett has worked with the SHC since 2011.

Jennifer Swails-Wenger, MS, MBA
Administrative Manager
Jen graduated from Cornell College with degrees in political science, German and biology. She completed her graduate work at the University of Iowa in preventive medicine and environmental health with an emphasis in epidemiology. She has worked at the SHC since 2001.
Rose Hearn
Administrative Assistant II
Rose is in charge of reimbursements, disbursements and deposits of the SHC. She is married and has one son. She has worked at the SHC since 1995.
Kristina Miller
Middle Office Manager, Insurance Liaison
Ms. Miller manages the main administrative office of the Student Health Center. Ms. Miller is also the insurance liaison in coordination with the Gallagher Koster student health insurance. She is the person to contact on campus if you have student health insurance questions. She has worked at the SHC since 2008.

Jeanell is a graduate of TSU and has been on the Student Health Center team since 2009.

Ms. Houston attended the University of Toledo. She has worked at the SHC since 2010.
Vijay Pandya
Custodial Worker / Transport
Mr. Pandya is responsible for errands in our clinic. He is often the person who transports students to the medical center for the emergency room, x-rays, etc. He is a native of India. He is married and has two children. He has worked at the SHC since 1996.
