ADD/ADHD Medications

Psychiatrists at Student Health Center will only prescribe such medications when the following information is provided:

  • Written documentation of educational and psychological testing and results of that testing establishing a definitive diagnosis of ADD/ADHD.    Hand written notes from a physician’s chart indicating only the diagnosis and the medication prescribed do not fulfill this requirement.
  • A written treatment plan from the evaluating therapist/clinician that must include:
    • The medication with dose and pattern of administration
    • Plans for follow-up including type (history, physical and laboratory) and intervals
    • Additional comprehensive plans such as cognitive/behavioral therapy, time management and psycho-educational counseling.

Students without the required psychological testing can make at appointment at the Psychological and Counseling Center for assessment (www.vanderbilt.edu/pcc).  In addition, the Student Health Center Mental Health staff can also refer students to other Vanderbilt or community resources for such testing.
