Insurance FAQWhy carry insurance if VUSHC services are free? Most students can have all of their health care needs fulfilled entirely within VUSHC. However, labs or X-rays that are done outside VUSHC or specialty clinic or hospital visits are not free and can quickly add up with an unexpected illness or injury. What if I have an HMO?An HMO requires that your Primary Care Provider (PCP) approve any visits to specialists and approve certain tests such as CT scans. Unless your PCP is in Nashville, you should use VUSHC for your primary health care needs while at Vanderbilt. Many HMO's have a nationwide network, so it may be to your advantage to change your PCP to a doctor in Nashville while you are in school. If a specialty visit or special test is needed, your insurance company will require that you seek the opinion/approval of your assigned PCP, even though you have already seen a provider at VUSHC. If your PCP is not in Nashville, then obtaining the services you need can tend to be more difficult. How do I file a claim?A claim form must be submitted by the service provider or the student for all insurance claims. Most providers automatically submit claims electronically. The University sponsored policy uses electronic billing via VUMC, VMG or other health care providers. Students with private insurance can obtain claim forms through their individual agencies when electronic billing is not used. Should students purchase at-cost medications or medical supplies/tests from the Student Health Center and wish to file these charges for insurance or tax purposes, they should use the original receipts that are provided at the time of service. Duplicate receipts can be generated for a minimum of three dollars. Who can help me answer insurance questions? An insurance representative is available at VUSHC (phone 343-4688) to help answer your Koster insurance questions. If you have questions regarding other policies, contact your insurance carrier directly. Also see frequently asked questions:
