Location

The Vanderbilt University Student Health Center (VUSHC) is housed on third (street level) floor and fourth floor of the Zerfoss Building, connected to the back of Medical Center North. Services are provided to all regular students currently enrolled at Vanderbilt University. A currently validated ID card must be presented in order to obtain service.

Emergency Services

Emergency consultation services (322-2427) are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during the regular school sessions. On-call nurse practitioners take phone calls from home (not on site at VUSHC), to assist students and RA's in making decisions about acute or urgent illnesses, injuries, and the use of emergency services. The Vanderbilt Emergency Department staff handles calls between 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. In the case of obvious severe injury or illness, students should go directly to the Emergency Room.

Charges

Charges: There is no fee for services provided on site at VUSHC. There is no charge to see a nurse practitioner or physician. Several lab tests are performed at VUSHC and are free of charge to the student. Other lab tests are sent to outside laboratories. Fees for these tests may be paid for at the time of checkout, or billed directly to the student's insurance company by the outside laboratory.

Medications from the dispensary and supplies (items such as crutches or slings) can be paid with cash/check, Vanderbilt Debit Card, or the student's account. The VUSHC does not bill insurance companies directly.

Procedures or tests done outside of VUSHC (such as X-rays done at the Vanderbilt Clinic) will be billed directly to the student's insurance company, and are ultimately the patient's responsibility.

Hospitalizations

Hospitalizations: Hospitalizations are arranged through the admitting office in the Vanderbilt Medical Center. The "physician of record" during the patient's hospitalization will depend on the medical problem leading to the admission. Insurance coverage will generally cover the majority of expenses, but the charges are ultimately the patient's responsibility.

Medical Records

Medical Records: After your initial visit, an official Vanderbilt University Medical Center number will be assigned to you. This number will be used on your electronic VUMC record. Your official medical record is the property of Vanderbilt University Medical Center and is shared by all of the Vanderbilt specialty clinics, the Vanderbilt Emergency Department, and the Vanderbilt Hospital, as well as Student Health. When you graduate or withdraw from school, your medical record can be obtained from the main Medical Records Department of the Vanderbilt Hospital. Their phone number is (615) 322-2062.

Adding information to and releasing information from your medical record: We need a signed Authorization for Release of Information form in order to request information from outside providers or to release information from your record to you or someone you designate. Click here to download a Request for Medical Information and Release Authorization in .pdf format.

Confidentiality

Confidentiality: Each visit to VUSHC is confidential. This means that nobody can have access to your file or discuss your case by phone without your written permission. There are pre-printed forms available on-line for transfer of medical records to and from VUSHC. VUSHC requires that you make an appointment with a provider to review the portions of the medical record that you wish transferred to another clinic. There is a copying charge for records released directly to the student, but no charge is incurred for direct transfer of records from VUSHC to another health care provider.

Referrals

Referrals to Specialty Clinics Outside VUSHC: Specialty services are available in the Vanderbilt Medical Center and can complement the primary care services delivered at the VUSHC. After a VUSHC provider has done adequate evaluation, a referral can be made to a specialist if your condition requires services not available at VUSHC. A referral to a specialist requires an appointment with a provider and is not generally possible through the work-in clinic. The specialist will bill charges for referrals to the individual student's insurance. However, the student is ultimately responsible for charges incurred.
