The Gardasil (HPV) vaccine is now approved for men up to age 26.  Interested patients should contact their healthcare providers at Student Health for more information.

Any student with a temperature greater than 100.0 and cough or sore throat should call the Student Health Center at 615-322-2427 and make an appointment for evaluation. The CDC and the TN Department of Health have asked that we increase our surveillance for H1N1 flu in such patients. Please be reassured that H1N1 flu DOES respond to the commonly used anti-viral medication Tamiflu.

Currently, the CDC is not placing restrictions on travel and is not recommending routine preventive Tamiflu prescriptions for travelers. Students with questions about other international travel plans should contact their healthcare provider at Student Health via My Health at Vanderbilt or by phone at 615-322-2427. The Student Health Center will be offering the seasonal flu vaccine as soon as it’s delivered, hopefully as early as September. We are also hopeful that we’ll have supplies of H1N1 vaccine by late October, and will update students as we learn more.

The state-mandated requirements include:

1.  Meningococcal meningitis vaccine (one injection) for all incoming students living in on-campus housing.  The law does allow a student to sign a waiver stating that he/she does not wish to receive this vaccination. Click here for waiver form.

2.  Hepatitis B vaccine series (three injections) for all incoming students, regardless of housing status.  The law does allow a student to sign a waiver stating that he/she does not wish to receive this vaccination (see below).  Click here for waiver Form.

3.  Measles, mumps, and rubella (2 injections) for all incoming students.  Any waivers for this vaccine are very strict, and include only certain religious or medical exemptions that must be approved by the Medical Director of the Student Health Center.  For more information regarding this waiver, please call the Director’s assistant at 615-322-2254 or email her at studenthealth@vanderbilt.edu

All incoming students should complete a Student Health Center Health Questionnaire that includes further information regarding the state-mandated vaccinations, as well as information on other strongly recommended vaccinations.  This Health Questionnaire should be returned to the Student Health Center with vaccination or waiver information.  This form also contains important health history information that allows the staff at the Student Health Center to better serve your needs.

The option of filling out on-line waivers and vaccine information for the state mandated vaccines only can also be accomplished by using the following website and following the instructions.

2.       Enter your vunetid and epassword

3.       Click on the red  +  icon at the bottom of the screen

4.       Use the dropdowns to enter your vaccination information, then click Save. 

The Student Health Center will then be able to access this information to document compliance with the Tennessee state laws.  However, we still strongly encourage all students to also send the Student Health Center their complete vaccination history so that our records are up to date and so that we have your health history. 

Emergency consultation services (322-2427) are available by phone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during the regular school sessions. On-call nurse practitioners take phone calls from home (not on site at SHC), to assist students and RA’s in making decisions about acute or urgent illnesses, injuries, and the use of emergency services. The Vanderbilt Emergency Department staff handles calls between 11:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. In the case of obvious severe injury or illness, students should go directly to the Emergency Room.

The Student Health Center does not have an infirmary.  Patients requiring observation after hours becuase they are too ill to return to the residence halls, will be observed and/or treated at the Vanderbilt Emergency Department.
