Proxy Server Information

A Brief History

In 2000 ITS announced their plan to discontinue maintaining a proxy service for campus. This decision was based on several reasons including out-dated hardware and security problems. Since a large percentage of the proxy server use was to allow access to library resources off campus, LITS began to work with ITS to determine a solution that would allow users to log into a library hosted proxy server securely using their VUNet ID. LITS purchased EzProxy and has had it in production for over 3 years.

Does the proxy server require the user to make any configuration changes to their browser?

No, the library uses the proxy server from Useful Utilities (www.ezproxy.com). This is a URL rewriting proxy server so the user does not need to install any configuration files.

Will the library proxy a non-library resource?

Absolutely, this is a campus resource, the library currently proxy resources for other departments on campus. In general, the only requirement is that the people accessing the resource must have a VUNet ID.

Can we proxy a resource that is only available to a few people?

This is possible in most cases. Please contact LITS to discuss the specifics.

How do I have my resource added to the proxy server?

Contact LITS. The URL can generally be added within 48 hours. It is possible to have a short URL created (ex. http://proxy.library.vanderbilt.edu/login/someurl/) or you can use the normal syntax (ex. http://proxy.library.vanderbilt.edu/login?url=http://www.someurl.com)

What protocols will the proxy server proxy?

Currently, the server will proxy http, https, and ftp. However, in June they will begin to investigate streaming audio/video.

If you have additional questions please contact LITS.
