Richard Painter mixed media February 18–March 26 Captured by an enduring faith, Richard Painter continues to seek a balance to maintain as he coins “purchasability” in order to survive in a capitalistic society. The ability for an artist to transform pure energy in the form of creative thought into a tangible physical form—the alchemy of art is considered by Painter the gift of the artist. Since 1995 he has utilized burning and the basic element of fire. “Either rapidly or slowly, everything burns,” he observes. “The stars, planets, rocks, earth, plants and animals, molecules and atoms - everything that springs into tangible existence starts being consumed by the oxidation of time.” This idea has informed his work and its journey. He says, “An individual life can be ended by a seemingly small event or endure unbelievable hardship to rise up and continue but life in the larger sense goes on.” The fragile entities in Painter’s work focuses on this point. They are. They exist. They continue in the midst of the fire that surrounds them. Gallery Talk: Reception following To 6:30 p.m.
