Johan Hagaman mixed media September 2–28 Nashville artist Johan Hagaman is interested in the small, everyday certainties, the myths and rituals we create to keep ourselves afloat and give us meaning, while being ever present in the larger, looming uncertainties. Inspired by primitive/native art, because as she states, “...it is so close to the bone of the psyche’s necessity to create stories.” Hagaman takes us both into ourselves and out of ourselves. She uses concrete in her forms because it is enduring and can withstand the stresses of time and weather; and wire because it is the opposite. Hagaman continues, “Opposites rubbed against each other create a spark.” Poetry informs and defines what I do.” She cites influences especially by poets, Emily Dickinson and Naomi Nye, “...both of whom make us look so closely at the little things in our lives that we see our reflections.” Gallery Talk: Reception following To 6:30 p.m.
