Steve Benneyworth

ongoing
public art installation

photo of sculpture

Sarratt Visual Arts Committee continues this year in supporting the Vanderbilt campus public art installation by sculptor and native Nashvillian Steve Benneyworth.

Benneyworth's work exists in a place where science and art meet on agreeable terms. A specific applied logic in complex geometric forms resonates with an invisible grid that underscores all of the pieces. As critics have stated, "these sculptures recall minimalist and formalist sculptors of the '60s and '70s." Concentrated manufactured modular units come from raw industrial materials and illustrate tension, mass, volume, and relationship to each other and the visual campus environment. In one shape, primary and secondary systems bring the nature of opposites into focus.

Listed below are the five sculptures that can be seen throughout campus with their corresponding locations:

  1. Antirocker, 2006, concrete, copper, and steel, 8 x 8 x 2 feet, North side Buttrick Hall
  2. Endless Column, 2006, steel and copper, 12 x 2 feet, Northwest corner Library Lawn
  3. In Cased 4-Cube, 2006, concrete and copper, 10 x 5 x 5 feet, Southeast corner Engineering Featheringill building
  4. Joint, 2006, concrete and steel, 16 x 12 x 12 feet, front lawn Zerfoss Student Health Center
  5. Cylinder Fragments, 2006, concrete and steel, 6 x 9 x 11 feet, South corner Student Life Center, 25th Avenue (pictured at right)
