2008-2009 RPW Graduate Student Fellowships

The Warren Center invites applications for seven 2008-2009 Robert Penn Warren Fellowships. These awards are designed to support innovation and excellence in graduate student research. They will offer graduate students a service-free year of support to enable full-time work on the dissertation.

Each award will include tuition, health insurance, a stipend of $18,000, a research budget of $2,000, and affiliation with the Robert Penn Warren Center for the Humanities. One fellowship is funded by the American Studies Program and hence is designated to support a graduate student whose dissertation research is in the area of American Studies. The competition is open to those students in the humanities and qualitative social sciences in the College of Arts and Science whose dissertation director and Director of Graduate Studies approve a timetable for the dissertation's completion by August 2009. Students who are or who have been recipients of Arts and Science and/or Warren Center summer fellowship support are also eligible candidates for the Robert Penn Warren Fellowship.

During the fellowship year, students will be expected to dedicate themselves full-time to dissertation research and writing. They may not be supported by other funds--with the exception of a Dissertation Enhancement Award--or hold other employment, including any type of teaching, during the course of the award: September 1, 2008-May 30, 2009. As part of their affiliation with the Robert Penn Warren Center for the Humanities, Fellows will be integrated into the center's interdisciplinary scholarly community through participation in regular lunches, seminars, and special events. As the capstone of their fellowship experience, each Fellow will present a public lecture through the Warren Center.

Applications for this award must be delivered to Mona Frederick, Executive Director of the Robert Penn Warren Center, by Wednesday, January 30, 2008. Applications will not be accepted by e-mail. Each application must include:

  • A cover sheet (which should be downloaded at: www.vanderbilt.edu/rpw_center/2007-2008grad.pdf/)
  • The candidate's curriculum vitae.
  • A dissertation description of no more than five single-spaced pages, including an account of the dissertation's original contribution to the field.
  • Two letters of recommendation, including one from the dissertation director that addresses both the candidate's qualifications for the award and his or her ability to finish the dissertation during the fellowship year.
  • A cover letter from the Director of Graduate Studies describing the applicant's academic record and ability to finish the dissertation during the fellowship year.
