“Representation and Social Change”

The Topic. The 2010/2011 Fellows Program at the Warren Center will examine the topic “Representation and Social Change.” The project directors are Laura M. Carpenter (sociology) and Bonnie J. Dow (communication studies).

The seminar participants will explore the complex and multidirectional relationship between representation and social change.  In our current globalized and mediated culture, experiences of social change are commonly communicated through a variety of representational means, and the reach and influence of mass communication increases the possibility that representations can be used to create social change as well as to reflect it.  Yet today’s conditions are not unique—historical examples abound of instances in which representations of circumstances and events, once disseminated, have both communicated and facilitated social change.  We will be interested in a broad range of representations, including verbal, visual, and other material means.

The Program. Each year, the Warren Center sponsors a Fellows Program with a particular thematic focus involving VU faculty members and one year-long visiting fellow. Fellows meet weekly and may have offices in the Center. In some cases workloads can be adjusted in consultation with the department and the Dean. Individual research funds in the amount of $4,000 are available to the selected participants. In addition, program funds provided by the Center can be used by the group for visiting speakers, conferences, or other appropriate program‑related expenses. The seminar provides an unusual opportunity for faculty members with a variety of specializations to work cooperatively on a common issue in a sustained manner.

The Participants. The Warren Center operates under the aegis of the College of Arts and Science, and in past years participants in its Fellows program have been almost exclusively faculty members from within the College of Arts and Science. Although the majority of the participants in the 2010/2011 program will also come from the College, we also encourage participation from faculty members from the other divisions of the University. We seek applications from our colleagues in the other schools, and look forward to welcoming individuals from those units as Warren Center Fellows.

Application Process. Applicants should send to the Warren Center a copy of their curriculum vitae (NO MORE THAN FIVE PAGES, PLEASE)  and a statement of one or two pages in which they describe the relation of the topic to their own scholarly project. Applicants should also notify their department chairs. Applications are due by Friday, November 20, 2009.

Questions? If you have questions about the program or the application process, feel free to contact the Warren Center (343-6060) or the program co-directors Bonnie J.
