Call for Applications
New Directions in Trauma Studies
The year-long faculty seminar will examine the emergence of Trauma Studies as an interdisciplinary field of study. In the wake of such recent large-scale traumas as 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, everyday violence such as rape and incest, and historical catastrophes such as the Holocaust, it seems timely that scholars intellectually engage with multiple dimensions of human suffering and its repercussions and representations.
Although Trauma Studies has emerged as an object of scholarly attention, little agreement exists about the boundaries, scope, and content of this new field. This seminar will turn a critical lens onto the "fact" of trauma, lived experiences of trauma, stories and representations about trauma, and intellectual and pedagogical issues related to scholarly investigations of trauma. An interdisciplinary approach will greatly enhance this emerging area of scholarship to further understand the individual and collective experiences of trauma, to intervene in human suffering resulting from trauma, and to assist in preventing traumatic events. The Program: Each year, the Warren Center sponsors a Fellows program with a particular thematic focus involving VU faculty members and one year-long visiting fellow. Fellows meet weekly and may have offices in the Center. Individual research funds in the amount of $4,000 are available to the selected participants. In addition, program funds provided by the Center can be used by the group for visiting speakers, conferences, or other appropriate program-related expenses. The seminar provides an unusual opportunity for faculty members with a variety of specializations to work cooperatively on a common issue in a sustained manner. The Participants: The Warren Center operates under the aegis of the College of Arts and Science. Although the majority of the participants in the 2008/2009 program will also come from the College, we encourage and seek participation from faculty members from the other divisions of the University. Application Process: Applicants should send to the Warren Center a copy of their vita and a statement of one or two pages in which they describe the relation of the topic to their own scholarly work. Black Europe, or Diaspora Studies in/on Europe The 2007/2008 Fellows program at the Warren Center will examine the topic "Black Europe, or Diasporic Research in/on Europe." The seminar will provide focus on "Black Europe" and the emergent field of Black European Studies in all of its contours, across periods, and from various disciplinary and methodological perspectives.
