On the evening of Wednesday, November 11, 2015 the Chaplain’s Office was delighted to be a sponsor and host of “Netflix and Chill/Date? An Interfaith Discussion on Navigating Values in Dating and Relationships.” As part of the annual Sex Ed. & Healthy Relationships week, the office joined with a number of organizations including the Interfaith Council, UKirk Nashville and Vandy Sex Ed. to discuss “hook-up” culture on the campus of Vanderbilt. While the phrase “Netflix and Chill” is a recent development in our language the idea behind it is something fairly well known. “Hook-up” culture on college campuses across the nation has been a highly discussed and even debated topic for many within the academic and theological realms. Yet the evening was an overall success as over fifty students, both undergraduate and graduate alike took part in the conversation.
The evening’s discussion covered a number of topics from how students first came across the idea of “Netflix and Chill” to the internal conversations students engage in to determine if they are or are not interested in taking part in such a culture. There were also interesting insights about personal spiritual ideologies, boundary lines, sexual health that students both agreed and disagreed on. While many in the greater culture might have wanted to shy away from the topic at hand, the students who attend were brave, honest, and most importantly, educated on the topic.
