eventText[0]='In turbulent times when intolerance and hostility continue unabated, stories of compassion are a crucial step toward mending the world. Numbers of stories exist of Albanian and Kosovar Muslims who risked their lives to save thousands of Jews, both natives of Albania and refugees fleeing Nazi-dominated Europe. Was it the ancient guest code of Besa or the teachings of the Koran that led them to consider the needs of strangers above the value of their own lives? The rescuers asked for nothing in return except to learn what became of their "guests" following the war. Not until the collapse of the secretive Communist Albanian regime did the story of the rescue become internationally known.

The life of fine-art photographer Norman Gershman was changed when he decided to seek out and honor in photographs the people who risked their lives during the Holocaust to save Jews. Photographer Stuart Huck joined Gershman in Albania to help create a significant portfolio of images depicting the rescuers. The Besa photographs have been exhibitied in the United Nations in New York and Yad Va'Shem in Israel.

Both Gershman and Huck are fine-art photographers trained in the tradition of Ansel Adams. Gershman's most recent book, Besa: Muslims Who Saved Jews in World War II was published in 2008. The stories in Besa will be the focus of a full-length documentary, God's House, by filmmaker Rachel Goslins.

Johanna Neumann was born into a family of merchants in Hamburg, Germany, on December 2, 1930. Unsuccessful in their repeated attempts to get visas to enter the United States, her family stayed in Germany until 1939, when they escaped to Albania along with other Jewish-German families. The Neumanns fled from one town to another in Albania until the close of the war, seeking refuge with their Albanian protectors. In June 1946, Johanna and her mother left Italy for the United States.'

eventText[3]='Bettina Goering, grandniece of prominent member of the Nazi regime Hermann Goering, has long tried to bury the dark legacy of her family history. Painter Ruth Rich, a daughter of Holocaust survivors, cannot resolve her deep-rooted anger over the suffering of her parents and the loss of an older brother in the Holocaust. Bettina seeks out Ruth in an attempt to confront her enormous guilt and her fear that the capacity for evil is in her blood. When the women meet, their hidden guilt and rage clash in a series of intimate and extraordinary meetings.

Bloodlines follows Ruth and Bettina as they face the past in their quest to heal the present. Their meetings are interspersed with individual interviews, powerful images from Ruth’s paintings, and archival photos. This contemporary film brings to light, in a way never before seen, the unwritten cost of war and genocide on future generations of both victims and perpetrators. Bloodlines gives relevant and timely insight into the difficult process of reconciliation and forgiveness, and the long-term consequences of hatred. A discussion facilitated by Sara Figal, Assistant Professor of Germanic and Slavic Studies, will follow the screening.

Sponsored in conjunction with the International Lens Film Series.'

eventText[5]='Eugenics, the belief and scientific practice that humanity can be improved by selective breeding of those from "good stock," was born in England and thrived in the United States. This theory led to the involuntary sterilization of thousands of the "unfit" and ultimately contributed to the horrors of the Holocaust under the Nazis. In the 21st century, public discourse is full of the "gene for this" and the "gene for that" for traits ranging from cancer and common disease to intelligence and behavior. How can we avoid the earlier horrors of a misguided focus on inheritance? Will we be tempted to eliminate genetic "deficiencies"? Professor Clayton will argue that attention to the history of past abuses, legal and social changes in the last fifty years, and the science itself provide powerful strategies for protecting the dignity and promoting the well-being of each person. Ellen Wright Clayton, MD, JD, is Rosalind E. Franklin Professor of Genetics and Health Policy and director of the Center for Biomedical Ethics and Society at Vanderbilt University.'
eventText[6]='Martin Weiss was one of nine children born to Orthodox Jewish parents in Polana, a rural village in the Carpathian Mountains. His father owned a farm and a meat business, and his mother attended to the children and the home. Everyone in the family helped take care of the horses and cows. In March 1939, his life was changed dramatically when Nazi Germany and its allies dismembered Czechoslovakia. Hungarian troops occupied Polana, and Jews were subjected to discriminatory legislation. In April 1944, Hungarian gendarmes transported the village's Jews, including the Weiss family, to the Munkacs ghetto. In May, they were deported to the Auschwitz-Birkenau killing center. Weiss, his father, brother, and two uncles were selected for forced labor; the other family members were sent to the gas chambers. Weiss and his father were sent to the Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria, and then to the subcamp of Melk, where they were forced to build tunnels into the side of the mountains. His father perished there. Weiss was liberated at the Gunskirchen camp by U.S. troops in May 1945.'
eventText[7]='By February 1946, Gyorgy Kadar had completed the first cycle of fifty-seven Holocaust drawings chronicling his experiences in five concentration camps. After more than a forty-year hiatus, he started his second Holocaust series "The Haunted Imagination." The second graphic cycle was completed in two years and consists of sixteen drawings commemorating the murder of nearly one-half million Hungarian Jews, many of whom died in Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration camp and the place where most Hungarian Jews were murdered. For Kadar, Auschwitz-Birkenau is both a personal and a generic symbol: one of the sites of Kadar's own incarceration and the place where twenty-five members of his family had been killed; simultaneously, it is the metaphor and symbol for all concentration camps.'
