Associate Professor of Computer Science Doug Fisher appeared quite surprised when Chancellor Gordon Gee interrupted his computer organization class at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 18 to announce that Fisher had won the 2006 Chancellor’s Cup.

Awarded to a faculty member for his or her extraordinary contributions outside of the classroom to foster relationships between undergraduate students and faculty, the Chancellor’s Cup is bestowed annually during homecoming week in a surprise ceremony.

“OK, everyone, here’s your hero,” Gee announced as he escorted Fisher into the student lounge of Featheringill Hall, which was packed with well-wishers.

Fisher received an engraved pewter cup along with the sterling Tiffany bowl engraved with the names of all the Chancellor’s Cup recipients since 1963, which he will keep for a year. He also was presented a check for $2,500 by Nashville Vanderbilt Club President Rod Freeman.

Gee said that in addition to being a “great teacher and a great researcher,” Fisher was one of the first faculty members to volunteer to lead a Vanderbilt Visions group, has counseled and mentored numerous students, and lives in McGill Hall. “That shows an unwavering devotion to our students,” Gee said.

Gee also said that numerous students had sent e-mails and cards praising Fisher’s support and assistance.

On receiving the 2006 Chancellor’s Cup, Fisher said, “I was shocked. This is really an honor and I very much appreciate it.”

Fisher’s research is in the area of artificial intelligence.
