Awards and Honors

Richard Lloyd, assistant professor of sociology, has authored Neo-Bohemia: Art and Commerce in the Postindustrial City, which was named a Top 10 Book of 2006 by Planetizen, a public-interest information exchange for the urban planning and development community. The list was compiled by Planetizen editorial staff based on criteria such as editorial reviews, sales rankings, popularity, reader nominations, number of references and recommendations from experts, in addition to the book’s potential impact on the urban planning, development and design professions.

Papers and Presentations

Ashwath Jayagopal, a Vanderbilt Vision Research Center pre-doctoral trainee in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, gave an invited talk, “Light-Guided Surface Engineering for Biological Screening Applications,” at the Institute of Biological Engineering’s annual meeting in Tucson, Ariz. Jayagopal is advised by Frederick Haselton, associate professor of biomedical engineering, and V. Prasad Shastri, assistant professor of biomedical engineering.

Christopher Johns, the Norman L. and Roselea J. Goldberg Professor of History of Art and chair of the department, delivered “Roma Britannica: Cosmopolitanism and Empire in Grand Tour Rome,” the summation address for the conference “Roma Britannica: Art Patronage and Cultural Exchange in 18th-Century Rome” at the British School in Rome.

Professional Activities

Douglas H. Fisher, associate professor of computer science and computer engineering, co-authored “Evidence in Favor of Visual Representation for the Dataflow Paradigm: An Experiment Testing LabVIEW’s Comprehensibility,” published in the April 2006 International Journal of Human-Computer Studies. The article demonstrates that the visual programming language used by LabVIEW, a software-development environment produced by National Instruments, gives programmers selected advantages over a textual programming language. Co-authors of the article are Laura R. Novick, associate professor of psychology, and doctoral graduate Kirsten N. Whitley.

T. John Koo, assistant professor of computer engineering, co-chaired the “Workshop on Hybrid and Embedded Systems: Technologies and Applications” held in Hong Kong. Koo, Gabor Karsai, associate professor of electrical engineering and computer engineering, and Janos Sztipanovits, the E. Bronson Ingram Distinguished Professor of Engineering, gave invited lectures at the workshop, which covered issues involved in the modeling, analysis and design of high-profile and safety-critical computing systems, such as medical devices, manufacturing systems, power networks, automobiles, aircraft and transportation systems.

On the Move

Laura Miller, a senior writer and researcher in the Division of Public Affairs, has been named senior public affairs officer and chief speechwriter. In her new role, Miller will take on expanded responsibilities for preparing speeches and other communications for Chancellor Gordon Gee and other senior officers. In addition, she will work closely with the vice chancellor for public affairs to develop additional speaking and outreach opportunities for Vanderbilt officials.

Whitney Weeks, a senior writer and researcher in the Division of Public Affairs, has been named director of strategic communications for the Division of Public Affairs, in which she will facilitate a number of division- and university-wide initiatives in communications and external relations. Weeks will help coordinate internal and executive communications, work on long-term planning, and spearhead a new initiative to enhance Vanderbilt’s position as an important destination in Music City.
