Social

Social wellness is having positive interactions with family, friends, co-workers, classmates etc. Aspects of maintaining social wellness include interacting with people of:

  • Different ages
  • Background
  • Race
  • Culture
  • Tradition

It is important to be able to communicate ones own opinion and feelings. As well as, develop and sustain friendships while practicing:

  • Empathy
  • Sympathy
  • Listening skills
  • Caring for others

 

Being able to balance both responsibilities and relaxation is important, while budgeting both time and money. Socially isolated people are more prone to illness and building tension and stress.

Balance is the key word in social wellness, balancing time and money. Obviously life extends outside of the classroom and campus, its vital to make healthy decisions regarding alcohol and drugs in private or social gatherings.

 

The use of alcohol and drugs increase the risk of being injured, unwanted sexual activity and academic problems.  There are obvious legal and disciplinary consequences for underage drinking and illegal drug use.

Another common problem with social drinkers may be alcohol poisoning; which is when the normal body functions are suppressed. This may lead to unconsciousness or death. Generally, occurs after consumption of large amount of alcohol, in emergency situation signs for alcohol poisoning include:

  • Cold, clammy skin
  • Unconsciousness
  • Slowed or irregular breathing
  • Vomiting

If anyone exhibits any one of these signs immediately seek medical attention.
