Special Programming Kick Off

With the opening of the new Vanderbilt Recreation and Wellness Center (VRWC) facility and in welcoming our new “Go for the Gold” members, we will be offering several new classes, clinics and programs to help everyone take full advantage of what we have to offer. Please take time to join us at these special programming events for the month of January.

Intro to Climbing Anchors

This session is designed to teach participants the basics of setting up two bolt climbing anchors.  On January 13th, at 5 pm at the climbing wall. We will discuss a variety of topics including: knots, anatomy of anchors, carabineer selection, and principles of safe anchor practices.  Prior climbing experience is not required.  Duration: 1 – 1.5 hours. Registration not required.

Let’s Get Knotty

Do you struggle to understand the difference between bights, bends, and loops?  Is the concept of tying a hitch more overwhelming than tax day?  Then this classroom session is for you!  On Jan. 14, at 5 PM we will cover a variety of commonly used knots and hitches to enhance your understanding and knowledge of rope work.  Duration: 1 hour. Location is upstairs Conference Room. Registration not required.

Wellness Seminar

Come learn all that wellness really means and ways to balance your wellness “wheel”. January 14, from 4:00 to 5:00 pm, location will be in the Wellness Resource Center. No reservations needed.

Urban S’mores

Tuesday, January 14 from 4 – 6 pm come join some of the Outdoor Rec. staff around the campfire (using our portable fire pit on the new concrete) for s ’mores, the American way at the Concrete Courtyard, in between the the Rec Center and the new Field house. We will have camp chairs and provide the marshmallows, chocolate bars, and graham crackers and even some marshmallow forks for you to use. There is NO cost; just bring your own water bottle as these tasty treats will make you thirsty.


Master Class 1

A sampling of multiple styles of group fitness and aerobics. Come join us for all or part of this class. There will be multiple instructors. January 15th from 5:00 to 6:30 pm, location will be in Room 3. No reservations needed.

Stroke and Turn Clinics

To provide stroke instruction for swimmers of all ages and abilities to improve their speed, efficiency, and endurance. Swim Clinics focuses on the swimmer’s individual abilities and works to perfect their strokes through drills, verbal and physical reinforcement and conditioning. Registration not required.  Clinic held January 15th, 20th and 31st from 11:30 am to noon at the pool. Please come dressed in your swim suite and bring a towel.

Family Swim Night on Friday January 17thfrom 6 to 8 pm

Vanderbilt faculty and staff are invited to bring their families to a free swim at the Campus Recreation pool from 6 to 8 p.m. One guest is allowed per child. Bring your staff ID and your own towel. For more information, call 343-6627.

Demonstration Kitchen Class

Come learn how to make easy snacks for studying- using only your microwave! January 21st from 4:30 to 6:00 pm in the Demonstration Kitchen on the first floor of the Rec Center.

Piloga

Come to this exhibition class an experience a blend of Pilates and Yoga. January 23rd, at 5:30 pm, location will be in Room East 6A. No reservations needed.

Aerobics 101

Ever wanted to teach aerobics??? Learn the bare basics of teaching group fitness. Anatomy, kinesiology and more. Taught by Becky Harrison M.Ed, January 26th, from 3:00 to 4:00 pm, location will be in Room East 6A. No reservations needed.

Swim Lesson Dates: Jan 27 – Mar 27

Both Group and Private lessons are offered year-round. Group lessons are offered for children at beginner levels and aimed to help children feel comfortable in the water and teach beginner level skills. Private lessons are offered to both children and adults. These lessons focus on your needs, ranging from bubble-blowing to improving stroke technique and efficiency in the water for competitive swimmers and triathlon participants. Group Lessons Time Slots: 4:00 pm, 4:45 pm & 5:30 pm – $60

Racquetball Clinic

Always wanted to play racquetball but were not sure how. Maybe you need a brush up on the rules or shot selection. This clinic is for you then. Tuesday evening’s classes will feature an introduction to the rules and basic shots will be taught. Classes will be taught January 27th, February 4th, and February 11th from 5:30pm-7:30pm. This class will introduce you to a lifetime sport for a lifetime of fun.

Play Nights

Always wanted to try a new sport? Interested in learning more about a certain sport? This is for you. Our Sport Club program will be hosting several play nights in January where they will demonstrate and give you a chance to try something new. Please watch our web for sports and times starting in January

Martial Arts

Check out demonstrations and learn how to become involved in our martial arts programs. From forms to self defense these demonstrations will show you how to unleash your inner ninja. (No date has been established yet)
