Winter Break

CLIMBING and CAMPING (Intermediate to Advanced)

DECEMBER 15 – 22, 2013  (Sunday – Sunday)
Joshua Tree National Park, CA
Cost:  $610 + your own RoundTrip airfare to Las Vegas

Bring $200 cash, check or Vanderbilt Card to the ORC to register.

Come join us at one of the BEST ROCK CLIMBING AREAS IN THE WORLD! J Tree has something for everyone with enough cracks, faces, roofs, arêtes and slabs to satisfy even the best climbers. With several thousand climbs to choose from, we will have no problem finding 5 star routes to enjoy all week. While we aren’t climbing we will be chilling in our group camp site nestled amongst the boulders and hiking trails.  We will climb at J Tree for 3-4 days then head back to Vegas where we will get in some extra time climbing on the beautiful red sand stone of Red Rocks Conservation area before flying home. Plan to meet us in Las Vegas and then drive to the park. Prior climbing experience is required and participants should be able to comfortably climb 5.7 face and crack climbs.

Cost includes: van transportation, food while camping, group equipment, climbing gear (except shoes), camping and entrance fees.

Cost DOES NOT INCLUDE your flight to or from Las Vegas. More info & flight times will be discussed at the first Pre-Trip Meeting.

Climbing experience is required and participants should be able to comfortably climb 5.7 faces and cracks.  This is not a beginner trip!!!

DOWNHILL SKIING &/or SNOWBOARDING
Dec. 16 – 21, 2013 (Sunday – Saturday)
Steamboat Springs, CO
Cost: $1,235

Pre-Trip Meeting: Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 5:00 pm

Join us for our 18th annual semester break ski/snowboard trip!  The price includes air (RT: Nashville to Denver) and  bus transportation to our condo, 6 nights lodging, and a 4 of 5 day lift ticket to Steamboat Springs, Ski Town USA, with 165 named trails and 16 lifts. The base elevation is 6,900 feet, with 9,080 feet at mid mountain and 10,568’ on top of Mt. Werner.   A shuttle runs from our condo to the resort, but it is also within walking distance.  We will be staying in the Lodge Condominiums, located 200 yards from the slopes.   These large condos have the usual, plus free wifi and laundry facilities on the premises.  There is also an indoor hot tub, two outdoor hot tubs, and an outdoor heated swimming pool.  The rate we are paying is for “full occupancy”, which means two people are assigned per bed.  If you want a bed to yourself or if a group wants to secure a unit all to themselves, there will be an additional $300 fee for every spot less than 6.

Trip Information


Most trips are designed for a small group of people (10-12), and many of the trips require no previous experience. The fee for each trip covers the activity, transportation, in-camp food, camping fees, and group equipment. For more information, look for flyers around campus or stop by the Outdoor Recreation Center (at 2600 Children’s Way and behind the new Vanderbilt Recreation and Wellness Center) during rental hours. This is also where trip sign-up takes place. Trips are open to all VU students, faculty, staff, and VRWC members. Alcohol is not permitted on any trip, except the Ski Trip.
