Climbing

Our climbing trips generally involve a little hiking to and a lot of climbing the various limestone and sandstone bluffs of the area. Our trips are designed for a group of 10-15 people, and usually require no previous experience, although it never hurts to try out our Climbing Wall at the Rec. Center if you have never climbed before. Each trip is led by Outdoor Rec. Trip Coordinators who are experienced in climbing. All climbing equipment, except climbing shoes is included in the trip price. Shoes may be rented for an additional $5.50.

CLIMBING (Beginner to Advanced)

Wall climbers, it’s time to try the “real thing”!  Kings Bluff is a great location for you to experience the fundamentals of rock climbing with our knowledgeable staff. Some climbing experience is preferred, so take some time to try out the wall first!   Shoe rental = $5.50 extra.  Estimated trip duration:  9 am – 6 pm.

ROCK CLIMBING (Intermediate to Advanced), CAMPING, & WHITEWATER RAFTING

This spring break the Outdoor Rec. team will be heading back to the New River Gorge for an exciting week of climbing and white water rafting in one of the premier destinations in the SE. The New River Gorge is home to thousands of climbs in over 12 different areas that will serve as our wilderness proving ground.  So get ready to test your skills on a variety of climbs ranging from slabs to overhanging forearm blasters!  In addition to the climbing, we will spend one of our days rafting on the Lower New River.  This section of river boasts big water and class IV rapids on a wide portion of the New with great recovery pools! Prior climbing experience is required and participants should be able to comfortably climb 5.7 face and crack climbs. Estimated trip duration:  9 am Sat. to 8 pm Fri. This trip is limited to 8 participants, SO DON”T DELAY!!!
Cost includes: van transportation, food while camping, group equipment, climbing gear (except shoes), camping & entrance fees, and WW rafting fees.

Join the VU Outdoor Rec climbers for a day of ego-bruising, stone crushing, and awesomeness as we descend upon one of the east coast’s most renowned boulder fields, Little Rock City.  This field is home to the many notable boulder problems that could keep the most seasoned climbers busy for year.  We will spend the day testing the limits of our strength as well as our skin!  Space is limited to 8 people, so don’t delay!!!  Climbing shoe rental is $5.50 extra.  Estimated trip duration:  7 am to 9 pm.

APRIL 4-5 (Friday – Saturday)

Jackson Falls, IL
Cost: $65

Pre-Trip Meeting:  Tuesday, 4/1 at 6:00 pm.
Join the VU Outdoor Rec. Program as we head to the mid-west climbing location of Jackson Falls, IL.   This trip will offer participants the opportunity to test their climbing skills on bullet hard sand stone cliffs.  We will depart Friday night to camp out and spend the duration of our Saturday climbing.  Jackson Falls offers a plethora of climbing styles to push your prowess and abilities. Price includes all technical climbing gear, instruction, group camping gear,  transportation and food while on site.   Climbing shoe rental is $5.50 extra.  Estimated trip duration: 5 pm Fri. – 11 pm Sat.

ROCK CLIMBING & CLIMBING   (Intermediate to Advanced)
June 14-22, 2014  (Saturday – Sunday)
Location:  Squamish, British Columbia, Canada
Cost: $810 + your airfare to and from Seattle, WA

Pre-Trip Meeting: Wednesday, March 26 at 5:00 pm
This coming summer the Outdoor Rec. team is headed to western Canada to spend a week climbing in what is considered the recreation capital of Canada.  We will fly into Seattle, WA, and drive 3.5 hours north to our campground at the foot of the Stawamus Chief (The second largest granite monolith in North America!).  Squamish boasts a myriad of climbing areas that range from single pitch sport and trad, to towering 2000+ ft. multipitch climbs, and world class bouldering.  Join our team as we venture north to this haven of granite to test our mettle on some of the globe’s best climbs!  Prior climbing experience is required and participants should be able to comfortably climb 5.7 slab, face, and crack climbs to get the most out of this experience. This trip is limited to 6 participants, SO BE READY TO SIGN UP A.S.A.P.!!!
You will need a passport for this trip.
Cost includes: vehicle transportation, food while camping, group equipment, climbing gear (except shoes), camping and entrance fees, lodging for the last night.

Cost does NOT include: Airfare to and from Seattle.  Participants must purchase their own tickets.  Specific travel times will be discussed at our first Pre-Trip meeting.

Trip Information

Most trips are designed for a small group of people (10-12), and many of the trips require no previous experience. The fee for each trip covers the activity, transportation, in-camp food, camping fees, and group equipment. For more information, look for flyers around campus or stop by the Outdoor Recreation Center (at 2600 Children’s Way and behind the new Vanderbilt Recreation and Wellness Center) during rental hours. This is also where trip sign-up takes place. Trips are open to all VU students, faculty, staff, and VRWC members. Alcohol is not permitted on any trip.
