This course serves as an introduction to top-rope climbing for the new climber.  The participant will learn how to properly put on a harness, tie-in with the figure-eight follow-through, and belay with an aperture-style belay device.  Additionally, the student will begin learning how to “read” routes and will be introduced to the grading system within climbing known as the Yosemite Decimal System.  In passing this course, the student will be able to belay at our wall independently of our staff during scheduled hours.

Leave the harness at home and come learn the basics of proper climbing technique.  This course includes two sessions, two hours each.  This course will focus on proper and efficient movement while on the wall.  General topics to be covered included body-awareness, effective weight distribution, static vs. dynamic movement, and conservation of energy.  The grading system specific to bouldering known as the v-scale will also be discussed.  Specific techniques covered will include stemming, heel/toe hooking, mantling, drop-knees, and much else.

Bouldering Outdoors:

This course will begin in the VRWC with a class on advanced bouldering technique.  We will cover more advanced techniques compared to the introductory class as well as go over the mental aspects of bouldering outdoors.  Following this class will be an outdoor bouldering trip for a day of climbing on the real thing.

This course is scheduled upon interest.  Please email Steven at outdoorrec@vanderbilt.edu if you are interested in taking this course.
