Aerobics / Fitness
Group Fitness Instructors: Instructor and CPR certification is required of all instructors. Indoor cycling, yoga, aqua aerobics, and other specialty classes must have additional certifications. No instructor certification is required for yoga, pilates, martial arts and tai chi classes only although CPR and specialty certification is still required. All group fitness instructors must have a minimum of one year teaching experience in a fitness environment. Applicants will be auditioned. Instructors must be enthusiastic about fitness and have a motivating personality. Instructors are responsible for their own shifts and must attend staff meetings.

The VRWC Aquatics program hires lifeguards and swim instructors year round.
Lifeguards are hired for recreational swimming, VRWC programs and community rentals. Each lifeguard must possess a current Red Cross Lifeguard/CPR/AED/First Aid Certification. (VRWC LG certification courses are held each semester.) A Lifeguard is responsible for opening and closing the pool, monitoring all activities within Vanderbilt University’s natatorium, ensuring safety and cleanliness of aquatic equipment, seating areas, and pool deck. Lifeguards also provide high-quality customer service, enforce facility policies, and ensure compliance with Metro health requirements. Lifeguards are expected to be mentally, physically, and emotionally prepared at all times to perform their job duties. Lifeguards will demonstrate a high level of professionalism and a willingness to positively interact with patrons as well as other staff members in the department.
Swim Instructors teach both private and group lessons for youth and adults throughout the year. Applicants must possess a current Red Cross Lifeguard/CPR/AED/First Aid Certification or a Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification. Previous experience required. Instructors will promote swimming skills and Learn to Swim techniques as prescribed by the VWRC or the American Red Cross.
The VRWC hires counselors and coordinators for CampVandy, the department’s recreational summer day camp. Camp positions span over 9 weeks of the summer, including 1 week of training and 8 weeks of camp programming. Camp Coordinators develop camp-wide programming, assist in administrative tasks, and plan special events throughout the camp. Camp Counselors actively interact with campers ages 5-13. They are responsible for creating, organizing, and executing active and passive programming that align with CampVandy’s theme week. Activities include climbing the rock wall, swimming in the pool, playing field games, and building arts and crafts. Both counselors and coordinators are responsible for ensuring a safe and inclusive camp environment.
Facilities Team Member:
A Team Member will act as an ambassador on behalf of the Rec. to the Vanderbilt and Nashville communities. During a shift, the ideal Team Member will enthusiastically engage in facility tours, opening and closing of the facility, cash transactions, enforcing of all policies (i.e. lost & found), checking out equipment, membership sales, putting up weights, cleaning cardio machines, enacting the emergency action plan, providing overall facility management, and supporting special event logistics to name a few.
Team members will be assigned to a project team that meets weekly. The project team is intended to better the VRWC's identity as a student-led, student-run facility. Examples of possible project team assignments include operations, training, hiring, and accountability.
Facilities Team Lead:
Team Leads are student managers. A Team Lead is responsible for managing Team Members, having a working knowledge of all operations, and overseeing the facility during their shift. Team Leads are expected to exhibit superb servant-leadership, customer service, and conflict resolution skills. In addition to attending the weekly all team staff meetings, leads will be expected to attend an additional weekly team lead meeting and to facilitate project team goal completion.
The Intramural program hires student supervisors and officials throughout the year.
Supervisors serve as on-site administrators for each IM sport season. Duties include supervision of officials, coordinating events, facility preparation, and equipment supply/distribution. Supervisors must be familiar with one or more intramural team sports and possess a minimum of 2 semesters of officiating experience and knowledge.
Officials are hired to officiate team sports including Flag Football, Basketball, Softball, Soccer, Volleyball, and Innertube Water Polo. Previous officiating experience and knowledge of these sports is preferred, but not necessary. The VRWC staff conducts regular meetings and clinics to teach beginner and veteran officials the necessary knowledge and skill set required to officiate.
Outdoor Recreation Center
