Office of University Web Communications: Update Your Web Site
Update the Look of Your Web Site

The new version of the Vanderbilt homepage and 2nd levels launched August 1, 2007. Below you will find information about how to update your site to reflect these changes.

Templates:
Templates are available to all Vanderbilt departments. There are two versions to choose from here and here. You can also use our content management system, Sitemason, for your templates. (*Note: In Sitemason, leave the page builders widths blank when using this template. Changing them will cause the page to render improperly in Internet Explorer 6.)

Logos:
These are the versions of the VU wordmarks we are using for the homepage and secondary pages:

For more wordmarks, see the Graphic Standards Guide. To have a logo, banner or other image created specifically for your department, please contact Creative Services or call (615) 322-0517.

Tips for Your Web Site:

Below are some very general tips for your Vanderbilt Web site. For more information, please read the WWW Guidelines.

Appropriate Use
The content of all Web pages placed on any university-owned server or delivered over the university network must comply with all Vanderbilt policies and procedures, as well as local, state and federal laws. Information providers and their sponsors are responsible for ensuring that Web pages are consistent with Vanderbilt standards and conform to existing computer-usage policies.

Content Guidelines

  • You must a have link back to the Vanderbilt homepage on your site. Any Vanderbilt wordmark should also link to the Vanderbilt homepage.
  • Your homepage must include a contact e-mail address as well as the department's U.S. mail address and phone number with area code. Please note: do not use www@vanderbilt.edu as your site's contact information.
  • You should also include a link back to your department's homepage on each screen of your Web site. This is important because people can enter your Web site without first going to your homepage.
  • A date when the site was last updated is recommended.
  • Every office is encouraged to update or refresh the content of its site at least twice a year.

In general, information must be suitable for distribution to both internal (campus) audiences and to external audiences. Though you may be posting it for a small internal audience, unless it is password protected, it is available for viewing by the world.

Information should be accurate, use proper spelling, grammar and punctuation. Time-sensitive information should be kept current. Periodicals must be kept up to date. Your department name should be in the title of your page -- this will help the search engine find your site. Photos should be recent and of good quality.

Spelling, Capitalization and Style
