Mel Bass

Mel Bass represents Vanderbilt’s Medical Center in Washington, focusing primarily on a broad array of legislative issues affecting the funding and regulation of the medical education, research and patient care conducted at the Medical Center.
Prior to assuming his current position in 2000, Mel represented the federal government affairs interests of numerous corporate entities including Alcoa, the American Automobile Manufacturers Association and the American Benefits Council on healthcare, tax and legal issues. Earlier, he served on the staffs of three Members of the U.S. House of Representatives and in the Office of Legislation at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

After graduating from Georgetown University Law School, Mel was a criminal prosecutor and civil trial attorney in Tampa, Fla., and a sports agent with International Management Group in Cleveland, Ohio. Mel also served in the U.S. Naval Air Reserve.
