Kevin Cain

Kevin Cain is the director of federal relations, health and biomedical sciences in Vanderbilt University’s Office of Federal Relations. Cain is primarily responsible for advancing the University’s federal advocacy priorities and objectives with respect to academic medicine, biomedical research and advanced practice nursing. He works closely with the senior leadership of the Medical Center as well as the University to develop and implement federal legislative strategies that advance the overall interests of the institution on issues ranging from biomedical research across the university to the clinical operations of the Medical Center. Cain interacts closely with congressional leaders in the Tennessee delegation, other relevant Members and congressional committees as well as key administration officials.

Prior to joining Vanderbilt in 2010, Cain was the assistant vice president for government affairs and programs at the National Health Council, which has more than 110 members with an interest in health.  In that capacity, he was responsible for coordinating the activities of the 50 voluntary health association (VHA) members, as well as the legislative agendas for the three issue teams, including appropriations, FDA, and healthcare reform. During his time at the council he served on the executive committee for United for Medical Research, a coalition of research universities, scientific societies, associations and industry that advocates in support of robust NIH funding. Prior to the Council, he was a lobbyist for the American Diabetes Association, working on such issues as NIH and CDC appropriations, NIH reauthorization, and stem cell research.  Before joining ADA, Kevin served six years on Capitol Hill in the offices of two Georgia Congressmen, including now Senator Johnny Isakson, leaving the Hill as a Legislative Director.  He has worked on more than 10 campaigns for House, Senate and Governor.

He graduated from Georgia State University with a BA in Journalism and Political Science.  A Georgia native, he now considers Washington, DC home.
