Vice Provost for Faculty

Timothy P. McNamara is the vice provost for faculty and professor of psychology at Vanderbilt University. His primary responsibility as a member of the provost's senior staff is to oversee faculty personnel actions in the College of Arts and Science, Blair School of Music, Divinity School, School of Engineering, Law School, Owen Graduate School of Management, and Peabody College of Education and Human Development. His office processes faculty offers, appointments, reappointments, promotions, and tenure decisions.
An important component of overseeing personnel actions is the management and oversight of the University Central Promotion and Tenure Review Committee (PTRC). The PTRC receives decanal recommendations for promotion or tenure (from all schools except Blair), and is charged with deciding whether the University’s procedures have been followed and standards have been met. The associate provost for faculty helps to select members of the PTRC, fields questions from the PTRC about cases, serves as an intermediary between the PTRC and the schools, and advises the provost on the strengths and the weaknesses of cases.
His office also sponsors a yearly workshop for department chairs and promotion and tenure orientation sessions for newly hired assistant professors. Other duties include overseeing the Center for Teaching; serving as a liaison between the Provost's Office and the Faculty Senate; overseeing the nomination and the selection process for faculty awards; and organizing faculty events with the chancellor.
McNamara joined the Department of Psychology in 1983 and chaired
that department from 1996-2004. His research investigates human memory;
especially spatial memory and memory retrieval processes. He is a fellow
of the American Psychological Association, the American Psychological Society,
and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
