Office of the Provost: Provost Areas

Associate Provost for Research and Graduate Education

Dennis G. Hall is the associate provost for research and graduate education, professor of physics (primary appointment) and professor of electrical engineering (secondary appointment) at Vanderbilt University. His research interests have focused on a variety of phenomena associated with the interaction of light with matter, the propagation of light in confined structures, and novel semiconductor lasers.

As a member of the provost's senior staff, he oversees the operation and campus-wide mission of the Graduate School, playing the role of graduate dean, and advocates for and oversees research outside the Medical Center. His overall responsibilities are rather broad, but his specific responsibilities include the following: the Division of Sponsored Research, the University Central Library system, the Vanderbilt University Press, the University Central Discovery Grant Program, the University Central Research Scholar Grant Program, and the new Program to Enhance Graduate Education (EGE).

In partnership with colleague Jeffrey Balser, associate vice chancellor for research in the Medical Center, he provides broad oversight of Vanderbilt's inter-school research centers and institutes and of a number of campus-wide services. He also works to strengthen Vanderbilt's relationship with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory through his (elected) seat on the Board of Directors of Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) and through the seat he occupies, on Vanderbilt's behalf, on the Board of Governors of UT-Battelle, the non-profit company that manages and operates that national laboratory.
