Associate Provost for College Halls

Susan Aston Barge is the associate provost for College Halls at Vanderbilt University. She graduated magna cum laude from Vanderbilt in 1981, Phi Beta Kappa, with a B.A. in psychology. She received a Master's degree in education with a concentration in administration from Tennessee State University in 1993.

Her career in higher education administration followed earlier work in the advertising field and as co-founder of a women's clothing store. Susan also served as director of development and alumni affairs at the University School of Nashville.

She has had 11 years of experience in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at Vanderbilt, serving as associate dean until 2002, when Provost Nick Zeppos appointed her associate provost in charge of the residential colleges project.

Since 1999, Vanderbilt students, faculty and staff have explored the idea of establishing a unique residential college concept called College Halls at Vanderbilt. This concept brings robust programming and increased faculty-student interaction into the residential experience, creating a sense of belonging and community for everyone. Its foundation is the Commons, a one year living learning environment for the entire freshman class beginning in the fall of 2008. Ultimately, all first year Vanderbilt students will live in the Commons and then move into one of seven proposed College Halls as they become available.
