As a supplementary service, Project PAVE has discovered the importance of including optical device goals and objectives in students Individualized Education Plans. Such goals can improve and ensure follow through in teaching a student to use near and distance aids. The example goals below incorporate areas of the expanded core curriculum for students with visual impairments.
Near Vision Goals
Distance Vision Goals
Near Vision Annual Goals
Demonstrate correct positioning and scanning with a prescribed stand magnifier (handheld magnifier or microscope) to accomplish a variety of specific tasks throughout the school day.
Initiate correct independent us of prescribed near device(s) to complete a variety of tasks throughout the school day.
Demonstrate and apply knowledge of visual skills related to the use of prescribed near devices needed to function independently in school and the community.
Identify near devices and visual skills needed to perform optimally visually in 3 preferred vocational settings.
IEP Objectives
Area of the Expanded Core: Independent Living
Objective: The student will demonstrate daily maintenance skills for the care and storage of prescribed magnifiers with fewer than 3 teacher prompts per week.
Area of the Expanded Core: Assistive Technology
Objective: The student will communicate purpose and function of prescribed devices for specific audiences including teachers, other adults, and peers upon request by the teacher of students with visual impairments with 80% accuracy using a teacher and student made checklist.
Area of the Expanded Core: Visual Efficiency
Objective: The student will independently obtain a correct working distance using a magnifier to view non-print materials and various text sizes and types with 100% accuracy.
Area of the Expanded Core: Compensatory
Objective: The student will use prescribed reading glasses instead of large print texts for silent sustained reading tasks throughout the school day each time a reading task is presented independent of teacher prompts.
Area of the Expanded Core: Career Education
Objective: The student will develop a system of independently transporting his/her optical devices from the school to the work setting and create a system for placement and storage for the device when in between near and distance vision tasks.
The student will identify and demonstrate visual skills needed to perform job duties for two jobs of interest with 100% accuracy based on a teacher-made checklist.
Distance Vision Annual Goals
Demonstrate correct positioning and localizing skills with a pre-focused monocular to accomplish a variety of specific tasks throughout the school day.
Initiate correct independents use of prescribed monocular to complete a variety of tasks throughout the school day.
Demonstrate and apply knowledge of visual skills related to the use of prescribed distance devices needed to function independently in school and the community.
Demonstrate correct independent use of prescribed distance devices to perform visual tasks identified as necessary for success in 3 preferred vocational settings.
IEP Objectives
Area of the Expanded Core: Independent Living
Objective: The student will demonstrate daily maintenance skills for the care and storage of prescribed telescope with fewer than 3 teacher prompts per week.
Area of the Expanded Core: Assistive Technology
Objective: The student will communicate purpose and function of prescribed devices for specific audiences including teachers, other adults, and peers upon request by the teacher of student with visual impairments with 80% accuracy using a teacher and student made checklist.
Area of the Expanded Core: Visual Efficiency
Objective: The student will correctly localize using a prescribed pre-focused telescope to view specific information independently with 100% accuracy.
Area of the Expanded Core: Visual efficiency, Compensatory, Orientation and Mobility
Objective: The student will correctly focus a prescribed handheld telescope to view distance information within single and multiple planes independently with 100% accuracy.
Area of the Expanded Core: Recreation and Leisure
Objective: The student will use prescribed monocular to observe activity on the playground and select a group of peers with whom to participate three out of five recess periods each week.
Area of the Expanded Core: Visual Efficiency, Orientation and Mobility
Objective: The student will scan to identify specified landmarks correctly 8 out of 10 attempts while traveling as a passenger in a vehicle.
Area of the Expanded Core: Compensatory
Objective: The student will use prescribed monocular to read and copy information presented at a distance within the same timeframe as peers each time the opportunity is presented throughout each school day.
The student will request copies of notes of information presented at a distance only when the information is not accessible through the monocular each time notes are presented.
Area of the Expanded Core: Career Education, Orientation and Mobility, Visual Efficiency
Objective: The student will provide correct navigation, as a passenger in a vehicle to 3 preferred job sties, using a prescribed monocular to verify street names, landmarks and correct route, without assistance during each attempt.
