Candle Free Fall

Demo Description

Use a dedicated plastic and rubber candle holder.
While standing on top of lecture table ,light the candle and drop the apparatus.
Observe the flame extinguishing under free fall conditions.

Scientific Principles

Vertical hydrostatic  pressure variation in the air surrounding a candle is necessary for  continuous burning.

This pressure variation disappears under  free fall conditions in the container.

Equipment

     Apparatus as pictured below.

Instructions

The photo shows the plastic and rubber air shield surrounding the  candle.

This shield prevents air currents from blowing the flame out.

The second photo shows the right end view of the apparatus and the corkable hole for  getting a light to the candle.

The third photo shows the left end of the apparatus, which is designed to be towards the floor when one releases the apparatus for windless free fall.
