Springs, Oscillations, Deflections, Normal Forces and Third Law

Demo Description

One may show oscillations of springs and deflection of structures by normal forces using the items in this Kit.

Scientific Principles

  • Harmonic motion of loaded springs.

  • Flexure of structures under applied loads.

Equipment

  • Two Springs with noticeably different spring constants and a mass to hang from them.

  • A string.

  • A rope.

  • A light-weight compression spring with a triangle of vertical rods on a stand to keep it aligned, so that it may be visibly compressed by a dedicated weight bar. There is also a much heavier-weight compression spring that will fit on the 3-rod stand.

  • A meter stick and two hooked masses joined by a dedicated string girth-hitched to them so they may be stably hung over the meter stick to cause it to flex. ( Introduction to demo (061) is provided by meter stick distorting under normal force load.)

  • A tennis ball.

Equipment Location

  • Kit (183) on [E-1-4] contains all the equipment not listed below this entry.

  • Triangle of vertical rods on a stand rests horizontally on [E-1-4] and [E-2-4] with the light-weight compression spring on it.

  • The meter sticks stand in corner by door into 4327.

Instructions

The first photo shows the 3-rod dedicated stand with the two compression springs on it.

The second photo shows a closer view of the springs and stand.

The third photo shows the rest of the kit components.

This demo is intended to be done along with demo (082) and demo (061) as a unit of important initial demos.
