Acoustic Source Version of Young's Double Slit

Demo Description

Two speakers are hooked in series to a function generator and placed 1 meter apart on the lecture table.

The resulting acoustic field heard in the room, for an input frequency of about 2KHz, has many lines of nodes and crests, which may be sampled by a student sitting in the lecture hall simply by moving her head from side to side.

Scientific Principles

  • Interference may be observed between the waves from two sources , as long as a constant phase difference is maintained between the two waves.

Equipment

  • Two speakers

  • Function Generator

Equipment Location

  • Kit (065) on [D-3-1]

Instructions

The first photo shows the speakers and function generator.

The second photo shows the three components aligned for the demonstration, with about a meter separation between the speakers.
