Anxiety

Anxieties are common. At times anxiety is experienced as a generalized physiological nervousness perhaps of unknown cause. At other times, it is focused on specific objects, places, or events. Also, anxiety can take the form of repetitious thoughts or behaviors. It is usually defined as an intense, persistent worry or fear that may seem unfounded.

We see many clients who experience anxiety. Although symptoms and intensity vary, the following statements represent some of their more common thoughts and feelings.

1 I am afraid I will get into a place or situation and will be unable to escape. True False
2 I worry I will be humiliated or embarrassed while hanging out with friends or in other social situations. True False
3 I sometimes find myself repeating the same behaviors over and over again. True False
4 I sometimes have racing thoughts about possible dire events. True False
5 I believe I worry more than others. True False
6 My attempts to avoid anxiety provoking situations interferes significantly with my daily routine. True False
7 I recently experienced or witnessed a very distressing event. True False
8 I tend to be startled very easily by explainable noises or actions by others. True False
9 I have experienced at least one period of extreme panic where I feel as if I am going to pass out or have a heart attack. True False
10 Whenever I have to make a speech in class my heart races, my palms become sweaty, and my mouth dries up. True False
11 I am afraid of certain objects or places, that most people would say are not likely to harm me. True False
