Alcohol and Other Drug Use

Coming to Vanderbilt, as to any university, is an event that motivates many students to examine their recreational decisions. Sometimes, this includes grappling with decisions about drug or alcohol use. While most don't expect to develop addictive patterns, quite a few do, and countless students report negative outcomes resulting from use of drugs and alcohol. Has your so-called "recreational" drug use or "social" drinking caused academic, social or occupational impairment? The following questions have arisen in our work with students and faculty dealing with alcohol and drug-related issues.

1 I have family members who are addicted to drugs or alcohol. True False
2 I used drugs and alcohol frequently before I was 13-years-old. True False
3 I can't "loosen-up" without drugs or alcohol. True False
4 I drink or use drugs to forget my problems. True False
5 I have missed work or school because of alcohol or drug use. True False
6 I have been suspended from schools, teams, or organizations because of drug or alcohol use. True False
7 My friends have talked to me about excessive alcohol or drug use. True False
8 I have been argumentative or violent while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. True False
9 I have driven under the influence of drugs or alcohol. True False
10 I have received a D.U.I. and or have been arrested for possession of an illegal substance. True False
11 I feel guilty about drinking or drug use. True False
12 I have tried to cut down on drinking or drug use. True False
13 I have noticed that it takes greater quantities of alcohol or drugs to get the same effect as before. True False
14 I spend inordinate amounts of time in activities planning to get alcohol or drugs. True False
15 I have noticed one or more of the following symptoms when I have attempted to cut down or drug or alcohol use: (heart racing, hand tremors, hallucinations, feeling fidgety, anxiousness, or seizures). True False
